I looked into going to Kuwait as a CSA contractor. The money would be excellent, but basically you stand a gate, tower or patrol some base somewhere in the rear. All military personell are considered your client. You have a static post. Its good for people that want more money as far as wages extend.
But thats about where it ends.
To the best of my knowledge, the most tactically honed that contractors get is VIP escort details and body guards. This is all they do tactically.
There are many positions they fill while staffing facilities otherwise.
The reason they dont conduct offensive operations is because, again they are civillian contractors. They are not subject to orders. You cannot count on a professional to be honorbound or referencable to UCMJ. They are not subject to military orders and have no business issuing them to or recieving them from enlisted and officer personell. You cannot have a civillian contractor that performs a single function in continuous and constant fashion do other errands. They are not bound by military standards and cannot be expected to perform certain actions they are not trained and/or qualified for. The civillian should be respected as 'Mr/Mrs' and never should anything be asked of them thats not directly relating to thier specific function of employment.
Although there are some wonderfully talented civillian contractor trainers out there, thier job is to maintain thier excellence and expertise and focus on just that one task to constantly train soldiers in that one aspect where they can focus thier attention to see units coming together with best results in performance.
They recieve none of the perks that enlisted or commissioned folks do other than a nice fat tax break for wages earned. Maybe a hotel room on the company dime and even some per diem cash, vacation, off. leave, sick days. morale travel incentives, hmo/healthcare options and most require capacity to pass a background check & physical with demonstrated resume relating to the position applied for. but thats about where it ends.
Mercenaries are something else entirely. Mercs are raw soldiers for hire that are capable of stake outs, target acquisition, scouting, reporting intel, and down into the nastiness of 'i could tell you but i would have to kill you' type stuff.
Those that tarry off into the field of a 'soldier of fortune'(someone who contracts outside of thier home government as a soldier) must be very careful in selecting clients. Wherever we are 'grey' in regards to diplomacy with a foreign entity, certain actions carried out by a soldier of fortune could end up getting them rejected/disenfranchised as a citizen for political purposes if its not deemed favorable or counterproductive by CIA etc.

1st of all they are not backup.
The companies are private security contractors that provide security for officials and installations and supply convoys of a non military nature.
The generic definition of a mercenary is a soldier who fights or engages in warfare primarily for private gain, usually with little regard for ideological, national, or political considerations. However, when the term "mercenary" is used to refer to a soldier of a national, regular army, it usually is an insult, epithet or pejorative.
They are not conducting raids or any other offensive operations. They are there for defense only. I personally do not believe they are mercenaries or soldiers for hire.

Ive worked with some of the blackwater guys, and seen them freeze up at the wrong moment. I always trust my fellow soldiers, not the ones who make 6 figures.

Why not? It's a capitalist country, might as well farm out some security jobs to private companies.
