I am 17, live in OK.
I worked for a school a few months, nothing permanant.

I hear $5,000 is a well-known tax area of some sort, and I can say I haven't earned over that.

The school did take out Social Security and a couple other deals but I didn't pay much attention to those details.

Do I need to worry about filing anything?

I think the zero tax bracket is $8400 for federal taxes unless you can be claimed as a dependent of someone else, like your parents. In which case, you need to file if you earned over $3300. You should file regardless if there is an entry on your w-2 showing that income taxes were withheld.

Did you get your W-2 yet? When you get it, see what the total is. If it's over $5150 and you're a dependent, then you are required to file. If you made less than that, but they withheld any federal income tax, you should file to get it refunded to you. If you made less than $5150 and they didn't withhold any income tax, then you don't have to worry about filing federal.

You only need to file if they took out federal withholding taxes. Take a look at your final paycheck (or W-2) for the year-to-date total.

You have to file to get it refunded, otherwise you don't owe anything and don't need to file.

Go ahead and file. If you are a dependent and you make over 3300, you should file. If you are self-employed and make over 400 you should file. I don't know where people get this 5000 figure from.
