I just recently bought a chihuahua mix puppy. I was told that her birthday was September 11, 2006. After looking online, I thought that I had until she was 6 months old to get her spayed. Now all of a sudden, my 4 year old male chihuahua mix dog is constantly licking her genitals and trying to mount her. Do I need to be worried? Is it at all possible for her to be in heat this early? I thought I had at least another month to get her fixed. Please let me know if it is possible for her to get pregnant at this age.

Thanks.

It is unlikely but not impossible for her to be in heat this early. I had a chihuahua a few years ago that had her first cycle at 4 1/2 months, so that is about where your dog is. If she is in heat, she will be all swollen on her private parts(vulva). And she will have a bloody discharge. It is more likely that your male is just showing dominance over the female. I highly suggest that you get him fixed first.

Yes it is very possible. At the Vet Hospital i work at we spay or neuter dogs around 4 or 5 months. You're dog could easily get pregnant before you even see her go in to heat if the timing is right. But then again if you take her in to get fixed soon it wont matter...if she is pregnant it will only be like a week into the pregnancy. The doctor wouldnt be able to tell unless the dog is about 3-4 weeks pregnant...then the vet would ask if you would like to terminate the pregnancy. It's done all the time, and not any more expensive since they are already doing an OvarianHysterectomy. But take her in now and ask the doctor to fix her. Most docs will fix as long as they are at least 4 months old.

Do you take her for walks? Chihuahuas, like all dogs, need to be exercised daily. If they are not exercised, or if they were babied when they were young, they will develop terrible behavior. If you start taking her on walks, this will be a way for you to bond with her. Taking her for at least a thirty minute walk a day will also help with her 'going wild' episodes. That is pent up energy. When do you feed her? If she eats before you do, then yes-she will think she is above you in the pack. feed yourself first, then her. Sit down with your husband and come up with ground rules you both have to follow when handling the dog. As for crate training, how did you do it? Do you ever use the crate for punishment? The crate is suppose to be her den, her 'space'. Never should it be used for punishment. re-crate train her, get a book on it, it will tell you how to do it the correct way. A training book will also help with some problems you are experiencing, a professional trainer would be an even better choice. Good luck.

it's unusual, but not unheard of for a female pup to go into heat this early. it may just be a dominance thing with your male. dogs will mount and hump other things to show their dominance. this may be what it is. but to be on the safe side, i would talk to the vet and see if she's big enough to be spayed and have her done now. also you could neuter your male and preserve his health and safety. he definatly is old enough. good luck.

It may just be a dominance issue. Check your female, if she is in heat there may be a little bloodly discharge and swelling of the vulva. Check with your vet, if in doubt and have her spayed as soon as possible.
