The cat doesnt cry, only licks it constantly, it has popped or "went down", he wont let anyone near it to look at it, but after it seems to have liquid oozed out, a day later , the huge lump is back, but bigger, i have a dog and 2 cats, but i do keep the animals seperated until i can get to a vet. now I do realize that is what must be ultimately done but i was just wondering what it could be , if its something fatal , contagious , to prepare myself for a huge vet bill or not..and if someone was wondering why i took it in in the first place is because not only do i love all animals but it had obviously been attacked or abused, and had very little life in his eyes. He may have been abandoned because he is so lovable, plays so friendly, eats well, sleeps alot and lets you cradle him like a baby, rubs his belly, w/o biting. Is there a home remedy i can do until i get him to vet?

Hi there. I am a vet technician currently going to school to become a vet. Now this is just a guess since I can't see it but it sounds like its an abcess. That when a bite or cut gets kind of infected and starts to bulge, because inside that huge bubbly area is liquid and pus. You need to take the cat to a vet so he can clean the ous out. Sometimes they can jsut squeeze it, and use a syringe to flush it out...but sometimes they do have to lance it (make a small incision) and flush it out that way. Its not contagious, or fatal but it does need to be taken care of. If its been a while the cat may beed antibiotics. If you can't get him to the vet right away use a warm compress (like a wet washcloth, but warm, not hot) and hold the compress over the lump. Sometimes this can reduce swelling and discomfort. It wont cure it, but it will make him feel a little better. Since the skin is being stretched because of this lump, he's not in horrible pain, but it is uncomfortable. And also make sure it stays clean...if it gets dirty like with dust or dirt, jsut use a wet washcloth. DO NOT USE hydrogen peroxide or anything else until you are seen by a vet. Doctors used to say use hydrogen peroxide on wounds, but all doctors have found its not something you want to put on open wounds. Just keep it clean until you see the vet. Hope this helps.

You may not need to take him to a vet. Its an abscess most likely from fighting with another cat. You can treat it yourself which I have always found works the best. Washing it with lukewarm salt water will help dry it out and help disinfect it. Do this at least twice a day. Even if you are only able to squirt a few drops on. Try not to use any antiseptic creams on it as they usually keep the moisture in the wound. It is not contagious. If after this the lump starts to return again try putting hot cloth on it for 5-15 minutes three times daily even more. This technique is called hot packing. Not too hot. Test on yourself first. This will help bring the abscess to a head or in some cases I've experienced its made the abscess disappear after two days. When it comes to a head (it will like the head of a blind pimple almost) Shave the area and using a sterile needle, pin or razor blade pop the abscess yourself. Do the salt wash thing for at least a week. But to avoid abscess for forming go over your cat (or dog) if you think they have been in a fight and pick off any scabs you find. This lets air to the scratch which helps to dry it out and stops the pus from building up. The best thing is the salt wash. Good luck.

I had a cat with an absess on its spine. It had been injured and all along its spine was infected. It had come to my house when I was feeding my outside cats. It was hungry and I brought it in to feed it. That's when I noticed the tear in its skin. We brought it to the vet and got some meds for it and a shot. We had her for several years until she succumbed to liver failure. Her name was Sweetie and she is missed.
There is little you can do except take it to the vet. Gently bathe the area and keep it clean. You might put some Neosporin Plus ,that has a pain med in it , on the site until you can see a vet. Good luck. I admire anyone who loves and takes care of cats.

Take him to the vet!! That is what my cat had, it was from getting bit by 2 strays. It became infected. You need to take him to the vet immediately. My vet was very happy to know we didn't wait, because the infection could of got to his blood stream.

Read my question, about my cat it's the first one on my question page, he had the exact same thing.

It's just awful.

ohh.. thats a toughy... maybe you should take him to the vet just in case because its better to be safe then sorry.

I think its great that you took home a stray. I did that once too and it was one of the best animals I'd ever had =D

Sounds like a cyst, something may have bitten him. The vet needs to drain it and give him antibiotics before it causes him trouble with his spine - please take him to the Vet ASAP.
Best of luck!
