How come 3000 paratroopers were sent to iraq now ? Why paratroopers and not just regular ground troops?

The President is trying to stop sectarian violence in Baghdad and believes that more troops are needed in the short term.

The military chose to send the paratroopers because they were an available force not already deployed.

I doubt the U.S. will invade Iran. Let me rephrase, I doubt the US would invade Iran before Iraqi forces are able to handle the security situation in Iraq.

Paratroopers are regular ground troops trained to parachute into locations. Who knows the specific reasons they were sent. Maybe they are there in case the military needs to drop troops into different parts of Iraq. It can be more strategic and faster to drop troops into an area rather than drive em in trucks. And if they need to drop paratroopers it is better to have em there, rather then try and fly them 12-20 hours overnight from the US. Think about the possibilities.

I Love conspriracy theories.
How about the "Paratroopers" are from the 82nd Airborne Division. They are a rapid deployment force whose task is to be able to depoy anywhere in the world within 36 hours. Elections are coming up(in case you did not know) and they will likely augment Brigades already responsible for terrain.
As good as the 82nd may be, 3000 paratroopers could not invade Iran. It would take at least 6000.

We heard your question - now try research. The 82nd Airborne is soooo much more than paratroopers. They are a fighting machine. There unit is well trained in all aspects of fighting & bring the ability of dropping in unannounced day or night. (sorry, I could not resist the pun).
On Jan 9th they cordoned off an area while Iraqi police arrested 3 bombing suspects. The 82nd Airbone is based at Fort Bragg & one of the most seasoned & respected divisions of the Army.
I have had several relatives that were paratroopers with the 82nd.
It is an hour from my home. Hooah!!!!

Paratroopers are regular ground troops, they just jump out of planes, and are used the same as general ground troops. As far as invading Iran, I think we have our hands full already as is with Iraq.

Paratroopers are simply light infantrymen without heavy vehicles or artillery.. They are the same as what we have there now basically. You don't need many tanks because the enemy always fade into the civilian population before you can muster them for a counterattack.

yes! Iran is next!
1. more terrorists than iraq.
2. HUGE #s of terrorist training grounds.

paratroopers are better than regular troops. ever heard of 101st Airborne in WW2? held Bastogne with a handful of soldiers until Patton came to kill all those Nazis?

the 82nd is a division specializing in airfield siezures.

They have the ability to jump into any territory, however as they are infantry, they go wherever needed - no matter if their airborne skills are necessary.

Hasn't it occurred to you that we cannot know everything the President knows and all that is going on for the simple reason that in this day of television and internet - anything we are told will also be told to the enemy. Do you really let your enemy know how much of his plans you know and what your plans are?

They function exceptionally darned properly as basic infantry, and it would want to be spectacular to have one hundred,000 military police over there, yet there are not that many on hand. One makes do with what one has.
