Pot is a slang term for marijuana buds. Grass is a slang term for marijuana that isn't used much today. Back in the 1970's, most of the bud available was Mexican or Columbian sativa. Sativa plants are more scraggly than their indica cousins. My mother would describe some "super grass" she got back in the 70's.
Cannabis refers to the family of marijuana and hemp plants. The three types of non-hemp cannabis are indica, sativa, ruderalis. Indica is from the Hindu Kush region of the Himalayan foothills. The plants are short and squat, have wide leaves and produce much resin. They are favored for makiing hashish, or hash for short. The resin glands are shaken or screened of of the sticky leaves and buds of the plant. Sometimes a much lower quality hash is made from discarded trimmings, it is called water hash.
Sativa plants are taller and the leaves are skinnier. Ruderalis grows in the russian steppes, it is sometimes used for marijuana breeding because the ruderalis plant flowers automatically at a certain age, while the indica and sativa plants flowering is triggered by the length of the day. Ruderalis has many desirable qualities, such as smell, stature, hardiness, etc. But it is a low THC strain. THC is the most psychoactive chemical in marijuana, although the smoke contains many psychoactive chemicals known as cannibinoids. The unique mix of these chemicals produces different types of highs from different plants. In general, indica plants are acrid, harsh smoke which produces a lethargic/ narcotic type high which is good for relaxation. Sativa smoke is more stimulating mentally, the aroma is sweeter or fruiter.

Common slang terms for buds include dank, skunk, killer bud or kine bud (KB) kiler green bud (KGB) mexi, dirt weed , etc.
There are many strains which have fixed traits which are used for breeding and sold in Amsterdam and British Columbia, such as Skunk #1, Northern Lights, Sour Diesel, AK47, Master Kush, Bluberry, Bubblegum, etc.

There is also an industrial cousin to marijuana, cannabis hemp. It isn't for smoking but they make rope out of its fibers, and the seeds are used for bird seed or pressed for oil.

If you are ever in Amsterdam, you can try some marijuana as it is legal there. However the buds there are very strong, so tell the coffee shop guy you are a rookie. Otherwise you will be overpowered and may not enjoy it.

Hash is really opium but it is smoked the same way in a pipe or bong. Pot, grass, weed, Mary J, cannabis, are all words for the same thing. It it also called bud in some places which are densely pack round clumps of marijuana with white or translucent crystals on top and will cause a newbies eyes to water and nose to run immediately and will tickle and tingle your lungs even if you are a hardened cigarette smoker. Good pot is also very, very sticky. You want to avoid leaf which is the poorest part of the plant. Stay away from homegrown which isn't very high quality at all. Avoid any that is flaky like parsley and not in tight, packed, round buds.

Pot, grass, marijuana, and cannabis are all names for the flowering bud of the Cannabis Sativa plant. Hash or hashish is the resin from the Cannabis Sativa plant, containing a higher concentration of the active physcoactive ingrediant Delta-9, TetraHydroCannabinol (THC).

"Cannabis" is the botanical name of the plant. (It is closely related to the hops plant which is used in brewing beer.) There are 3 different types: cannabis sativa, cannabis indica, cannabis ruderalis, and then there are also hybrids of the other three. Ruderalis is not actively cultivated because it has unfavorable growing characteristics and produces low amounts of intoxicating compounds. Indica strains (originating from Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc.) are typically shorter, bushier, relatively greener and faster-maturing than sativas.

Marijuana refers more specifically to the flower bud portion of the plant consumed for its intoxicating effects. A popular synonym -well known in rastafarian culture -is "ganja" which is actually of Hindi origin. There are plenty other terms, too, including "grass, pot, herb, trees", etc. They all refer to the same thing. The
passé term, "dope" is also sometimes used, but users typically consider it crass.

If you look at a mature-flowering cannabis plant, you will notice that it is frosted with tiny crystals called "trichomes". These resinous trichomes help protect the plant from environmental stress like UV light radiation, the drying effect of low-humidity air, etc. The connisseur, however, is more interested in the psychoactive chemicals (THC and other cannabinoids) that they contain for they are responsible for the plant's mental high.

During flower bud cultivation and harvesting handling causes some of the crystals to shed and to stick to tools. Trichomes can also be deliberately removed form buds and collected. They are then mashed together or otherwise processed to form "hashish" or "hash" for short.

These concentrated resin balls are more potent than the dried cannabis/marijuana buds and impart a more soaring peaking type of high. The buds, in comparison, induce a more mellow euphoria. Perhaps a whiskey versus wine comparison is fair.
