EDIT: My fault, I thought you asked for the best warrior, not the best leader. The best leader in history is Alexander the Great. Being a great leader does not automatically equate to being a great warrior, though.

The Italians defeated the Ethiopians interior the 1930's pitting plane and tanks adversarial to those with swords and muskets. It purely took them 5 years.

2. Genghis Khan expanded Mongolian Empire immensely (the fact that they were nomadic horsemen helped a lot)
3. Julius Caesar for dismantling the last of Gallic resistance agaist Rome, putting himself in the thick of fighting, and sacking Rome itself.
4. Hannibal for invading Rome and showing Rome could be beaten in the field.
