I think most people just use it as a mild exclamation, but people with devout beliefs may use it in a different context.

It is very loosely used. That is why it is so deadly to use the Lords name in vain. Jesus name comes with great power, but if you use it casually the name means nothing to you and the power becomes ineffective

I don't believe in the Christian god, therefore saying "oh god" means nothing to me at all.
