By peddling quickly you get a smoother more fluid action, better technique. The four muscle actions flow together (Push down, pull up, kick forward, drag back.) You work these muscle actions more equally. In time you can deliver more constant power.

There is less load on the joints.

During a climb you can say seated longer. The bike will surge less and the speed will be more constant

High repetition low load equals less muscle bulk (less weight).

Chain and component wear will be reduced (Constant load rather than a jerky one)

The only real disadvantage is that you will still be able to deliver more peak power by standing, but you will be less likely to do it.
