My friends at work claim that speaking in tongues is "the first initial sign of the filling of the Holy Spirit." I tell them that I am filled with the Holy Spirit just as they are but I have never spoken in tongues. After praying about it and doing some research on the subject here is my own personal conclusion:
The gift of tongues is often counterfeit brought about by peer pressure. But there is also the genuine gift which is real. People who speak in tongues seem to think that everyone filled with the Holy Spirit does so. I disagree. The gift of tongues is simply given to people who need a sign. This is clearly illustrated in the New Testament when the disciple, Thomas, doubted that Jesus had risen from the dead. Jesus offered Thomas his nail peirced hands to touch as a 'sign' to help his unbelief. To those of us who are fully convinced of the reality of Jesus and His saving work, no 'sign' is needed. Why offer a jury more evidence if they've already accepted the truth? So, contrary to tongue speaker's popular belief, speaking in tongues doesn't mean you are more spiritual (the Corinthian church spoke in tongues and they were the most corrupt church in the NT!), if anything, it means your lack of faith needed an extra boost and God was gracious enough to give it to you.

Your answer lies primarily in the book of Acts. Read Acts and note what happens every time that believers receive the Holy Spirit. In a majority of instances the result was speaking in tongues. In almost every instance some outward sign that the Holy Spirit was recieved was given. Of course if you do not speak in tongues it does not mean you are not a believer, but why not take the extra step to recieving the power of the Holy Spirit? Speaking in tongues will not only edify you, but it is the gateway to other spiritual gifts, It also helps you pray when you know not what to pray. I suggest you read books about this subject from people that have lots of experience. After all you would not want a piloting lesson from someone who has never flown.

When you speak in tongues you are speaking the "mysteries of God", or, whatever He wants to say at that time. When God created Adam, He gave him complete control over the Earth. that meant that if God wanted to do something on Earth, He had to run it through Adam. Then, Adam turned around and committed treason against God by letting Satan direct his thinking. Man is still in charge of the Earth, but God is now competing with Satan for man's obedience. So, how do tongues fit into this? The mouth is the way that God can legally influence the Earth. Words are more than sounds. They are ways to convey ideas and influence people, which makes them powerful. And when a man speaks God's words, it gives Him permission to have an effect on the Earth. This is also the method Satan uses to spread his influence. That is why there is so much controversy about movies and music. So tongues, in reality, are God (who can see everything, past, present, and future) using a man's mouth to speak.

This depends on the faith and religion of the person being gifted. Buddhists have recorded members of their faith speaking in tongues, as have Hindus and other faith groups. Originally in the Christan mythos, it signified the anointing of the Holy Spirit on the Disciples following Christ's Ascension. Modern contexts have taken out of this perspective and have slightly twisted it around. The early Church saw this as a sign that the person was meant to be a missionary to the Gentiles. Many Pentecostal and Fundamentalist Churches see this as proof that a person has been baptized by the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote of this as being of the least of the gifts as it does nothing for the body, unless an interpreter is present to interpret what is being said. For this reason speaking in tongues was meant to only be a private occurrence.

The first thing that happens to anyone at the point of receiving the Holy Spirit is speaking in tongues. Go and check the book of Acts Chapter 2.
It is well with you in Jesus name!

Well its quite simple. There are many different peoples all over the world that speak different languages. If I went to one of these countries and tried to speak the American tongue they would not be able to understand me.
I'm am surprised at you for not knowing this? Good luck with other questions you have in life.><>

Speaking in tongues would be the ability to quickly learn to speak a foreign language for the purpose of communicating with someone regarding the gospel.

The thing is the "tongues" is not in a language anyone understands so what, it is a holy language? I doubt it! Research says it is a learned behavior!
