Hi there...it's likely your cat has an abscess which needs to be drained and be cleansed ONLY with water and antibacterial soap until you can see a veterinarian. Please do NOT use any hydrogen peroxide as this will push the bacteria deeper into the wound and cause death to healthy surrounding tissue. Any vet can confirm this fact!!

As soon as you can get to the vet they will evaluate and flush the wound out more if necessary and prescribe antibiotics to thwart secondary infections as a result of the abscess.

The swollen lip could be from feline chin acne, which cats get eating from plastic bowls because they harbour bacteria. Consider using glass or stainless bowls to eliminate the recurrence of the acne. More on feline acne: http://www.fabcats.org/acneandstudtail.html

It may be a splinter or insect bite or cut that is infected. I would call your vet and report the symptoms & odor....they will know what is best.

I believe that hydrogen peroxide (3%) is safe to swab on the area....and something like a little listerine might help. However....please defer to others who say they are trained professionals.

My cats are generally healthy and happy.....and I have 40 years experience as a pet owner.... but I would call and get a vet's opinion BEFORE treating the bump. Good Luck to both of you!

She needs to see a vet. Your description sounds like an abcess and if infected for too long will cause your cat to get very sick...not to mention how she must feel. Why put her through the agony.

I think you need to take your cat to the vet...I know it can be pricey and all...but from the sounds of it there is something wrong...and although we could all take a guess..it would be best to have a vet's opinion on the problem and then you could take the proper course of treatment.....Anyway good luck....I hope she feels better....

It's time to start a long and loving relationship with your local vet.

Give them a call ASAP.
