I was filing for my federal online and it asked if i needed to complete a state return. On my W2 theres a box that reads 'State Income Tax' and underneath that an amount which I paid out of my wages. I'm assuming I don't need to file for a return (which means getting my money back). As far as I know, it's MD's money. Should I just file for my federal? Then again, after I was done with my federal it said that I did not owe any taxes before it took me to the State Return option. What should I do?

You need to file because there is always the possibility that you either paid too much in which case you would get money back or you could have paid too little which would mean you have to pay in. If you don't pay what's owed it would be considered tax fraud- by paying money of any kind to both state and federal you have to file.
