I have a friend who says it is not necessary to rinse. But if you don't rinse, isn't the spaghetti starchy.

If you rinse it with cold water, it won't be starchy anymore.

If you don't rinse spaghetti, it is starchy and sticky. Also, any that is not eaten right away will glue together and be unusuable. Cool water works best. Hot water doesn't make a complete rinse and cold water... well just makes the pasta too cold. Hot sauce and warm pasta. Yumm.

Rinsing the pasta after cooking is a bad idea for a couple of reasons. It can cool the pasta and prevent absorption of a sauce, and it can wash away any remaining surface starch, which at this point in the cooking can work to your advantage. The small amount of starch left on the pasta by the cooking water can thicken your sauce slightly.

For pasta sauces that include egg, like carbonara, it's a good idea to reserve a bit of the pasta cooking water to stir into the sauce. In this case, the starch-enriched water not only thickens the sauce a bit, but it also helps prevent the egg from curdling when it meets the hot pasta.

Never, never, never rinse pasta of any kind. The finished product will not be starchy and the sauce that you are using with it will coat the strands, shapes et. al. a lot better. The only time you would even consider rinsing pasta is if you intend to use it in a cold past salad and you do that to insure that the product will stop cooking and not congeal into a nasty mess.

rinsing the pasta removes the starch on the exterior of the pasta. I rinse in hot water if making a hot dish and cold water if making a cold dish. Most of the time I don't bother rinsing at all. I just dump all the other ingredients for the dish into the kettle or bowl.

don't rinse unless you plan on serving it cold. it is slightly starchy when it is just cooked, but, assuming you sauce it quickly the pasta won't stick together and the extra starch will help the sauce adhere. If you are going for a cold application - pasta salad- then rinse and shake dry and toss with some light oil appropriate for your dish. It will help keep your pasta salad from turning into an inedible ball.

I don't rinse it. I add a little oil to coat the cooked pasta so it doesn't stick together.

Should I rinse pasta after cooking?

We recommend rinsing pasta only if you're preparing it for a cold salad; rinsing in cold water will help to cool it quickly. For all other uses, we do not recommend rinsing since it reduces the serving temperature of the pasta and sauce may not cling as well because residual starch is rinsed away. However, if you are accustomed to rinsing pasta, please do whatever you prefer or feel comfortable with.

when i cook pasta, i usually rinse it with cold water (running water from the faucet). so some of the dirt will be washed out, and to prevent overcooking of the pasta, because the heat will still be there when you put it out of the boiling water.

all in all, it will be up to you wether you will rinse it or not. but, definitely if you will rinse it, with cold water, not hot. rinsing it with hot water will make the pasta soggy.

Spaghetti is the one noodle you really do want to rinse! I rinse mine in hot water so the noodles are hot when I serve them.
