For the same reason it's hard to do simple arithmitec when someone is standing right next to you saying "4, 6, 15, 9, 11, 21" the radio breaks your concentration when you're looking for an address.

Because you want to concentrate on what you are doing and perphaps turning down the radio eliminates that distraction.

Because you're trying to concentrate. It's hard to concentrate if you have something playing in your ear while you're thinking about finding the address.

because it takes away the focus of looking for the number on the mailbox or house...in your head you're scanning for the number but if you have the radio on it confuses the mind and finds it harder to recognise the number

good question.i've never stop to think about it,but i do do that or if someone in the car is talking i ask them to be quite.maybe somethin to do with concentration?
