Not far, about 118 miles. Although the two metro areas have actually merged together since Orange county, which sits in between, has become a bedroom community for both. Commuter rail even links the two regions with coaster rail traveling from San Diego to Oceanside and Los Angeles Metrolink continuing on from there to Downtown LA. Amtrak also has frequent service along the corridor though is more costly. Driving can be miserable along I-5 due to the very heavy traffic so rail would likely be your best travel option. Good luck!

Iraq is the most violent place on earth.
In LA, most of the violence is gang related. Stay out of gangs, know where you're going, and keep your wits about you and you won't have any trouble.

Los Angeles is HUGE.
So it's divided into different regions.
West L.A. = rich, *safe* areas like Beverly Hills, Malibu, Brentwood, Bel-Air, etc.
San Fernando Valley = middle class suburbs, not much crime.
Downtown L.A., East L.A., South Central = areas of crime, predominantly black/hispanic area.
So just avoid East and South L.A. and you'll be fine.

I spent 3 weeks in LA recently. Had never been there before.
It seemed no more dangerous than other big cities I've been in.
I never went to South Central or East LA though. I encountered no gangs.

Los Angeles is safe as long as you use common sence (as with any other city in the world).
As long as you dont walk around gang neighbourhoods late at night, you should be fine.

Thinking of going to LA- to live and relocate, vacation?? It is no different than going to SF,Miami, NYC,, gangs live everywhere, homeless people begging on the streets(even in suburbs) There are good and bad parts of any cities, just depends where and what you can afford to rent and/or buy,, what you see on tv, is not all hollywood stars...

It's a good idea if you visit during the day lol but it's true remember if you see shoes on the telephone wires they sell drugs on that area. Night time is the most violent time with gangs walking down the street etc. Although I live in Chatsworth, my friend lives in L.A. and tells me what goes on one time he told me his next door neighbor got a brick thrown at his window and the car speeding away. it's not a good idea Hollywood is not really Hollywood anymore cracks in the street homeless sleeping outside with jackets and a piece of paper (the business section) sad but true listen to the Streets of Philadelphia by Bruce Springsteen on www.youtube.com and that is the true Hollywood and that "I Love L.A." by Randy Newman is not L.A. truth be told

I don't know about that town, but Los Angeles is pretty much a pit.
When god decides to give the world an enema, he's going to insert the hose in LA, that's for sure.....
