I am not extremely overweight or anything. I just broke it off with my boyfriend or i should say was broke off with. I don't know why but all i think of is eating. Not like alot of gross food or anything. Ex. I know i just ate a piece of pizza but there is that italian salad in the fridge. And i some of it. So i guess my question is, how do you stop yourself from eating when you are not really hungry?

I am plagued with the same questions.
But I think it's true that the degree to which we both obsess and focus on food could be an eating disorder. Which means this goes a lot deeper than just food.

I've went so far as to tape my mouth shut before, although I would never recommend that as a valid solution to your problem...I have gotten that frustrated before.

They say most cravings/urges pass within fifteen minutes. Try sitting on your hands for fifteen minutes and see if the need to get that salad passes. Or if it doesn't pass, or comes back, just try to occupy yourself. Do something active or repetitive, like laundry or house cleaning. It will keep you busy, take your mind off of it a bit, and hopefully raise your metabolism so even if you do eat more it won't take such a toll on your body. Just suggestions. (I think I'm going to try a few of my own right now.)

If you feel like you're willing to delve into yourself though...you might try writing about this. Honestly. I know it might sound silly to most people to be writing about food, but with things like this (eating disorders and emotional eating) it is important for us to sort our feelings out.

I've also tried writing out a list of all the things I was craving, and then burning the paper. Sounds kind of insane, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But the logic behind it is that you are getting this all on paper, looking at the list and seeing how unhealthy it is, then completely destroying those cravings by burning them.

Do something else before you develop the habit of being a compulsive eater. You're emotional right now and eating satisfys that urge to fill an empty space. I would suggest that you start walking when you feel this way. It's great exercise and it will help you physically and mentally. Chowing down will only lead to a viscious cycle. Godloveya.

I get on the internet and have a big glass of diet cole or splurge and have a real pop. It keeps my mind on fun stuff and off of food and the big ol' Pop fills me up and tastes sweet too.
I struggles with this too for a while and you just have to find other things to keep your mind off of the sad things, or you can try to work on solving whaever problems you have that make you sad. It is sometimes like solving a puzzle and can be very satisfying and helpful too.

It's called self restraint. If you don't want to eat then don't. Or you could throw out all temptations then go for a walk. Good luck
