Does your dog pee like he cannot control it or is he just peeing 'everywhere' around your house? If he cannot control it he may have a urinary infection. If he is marking his terrority then neutering can help but won't completed solve the problem. You will still need to train him to go potty outside and this takes time.
1. Get him on a food/ water schedule especially if you are not with him all the time. Feed twice a day morning and evening. Offer water after feeding and when dog is playing. You can offer it all the time once the training is set.
2. I let my dogs out to potty as soon as I get up in the morning.
and I feed them before I start getting ready. It takes me about an hour to get ready so I offer them water before I leave and let them go potty one more time before I leave.
3. As soon as you get home let him out to go potty. Feed him while you are getting situated, changing clothes etc. and then offer water about an hour later. Let him back out to potty again later on and right before you go to bed.
4. Get some enzyme based pet stain remover from a petstore and spray it on all areas that he has peed on. Limit his access to these areas ofif possible during the potty training unless his is supervised.
5. Idealy, if someone is with him throughout the day, he should go out every 3-4 hours but a schedule variation can easily be taught.
If you are patient and include other in the household to help train him then he will be trained in a few weeks to a month's time.
If you do not plan to breed him, neutering is a good option. It is not drastic and after about a week he will be as good as new. He may gain a little weight but as long as you maintain exercise and food amount he will be fine.
Good luck and be patient!!!

Yes neutering will help. If he is one year old, he is just hitting his sexual maturity and will soon begin to demonstrate a lot of undesirable behaviors if left unfixed. Marking his territory is one, which is what he's doing now. He'll possibly become more aggressive and territorial as well. He'll also be harder to control when outside and will become an escape artist as he's looking for a mate. Dogs can smell females in heat up to 2 miles, so this can make the animal extremly difficult to control and confine.
It's best to get him fixed. He will be healthier as well (less chance of cancers).

LOL I thought you were thinking of men...in that case I would have said it would be a good deterent from infidelity...
As for your schnauzer I think that sounds a bit harsh for the poor little guy. He just needs some behavioral therapy. Ask your vet about ways to deter him from peeing everywhere. Just like kids you need to train your animals on using the bathroom...

It isn't too drastic. It's a simple procedure and he will be fine in a day. Yes, it does help keep a male dog from peeing (marking his territory) everywhere.
It will be a kind thing for you to do for him.

by a year old it might be to late. male dogs urinate on anything and everything to make sure an intact female knows he was there and to let ther males know its his territory. but getting him nutered can have many benifits, longer life, less chance of roaming or getting loose, testicular cancer is out of the question because he will have none. there are many healthy benifits just check out the humane societies website. there are many more reasons then i have listed that can benifit him. and to tell you the truth i really dont think he'll miss 'em.

If you do not plan to use your dog as a stud, you SHOULD have him neutered; it is done humanely and will prevent him from wanting to roam (running away and being damaged or killed) and from siring unpedigreed offspring if he is pedigreed. And, it may very well solve his behavior problem, too. Male cats tend to spray, and neutering them generally eliminates or curtails that instinct. You would truly be doing your dog a favor if you were to have him neutered.

fixing your dog has nothing to do with a dog marking . so if that's the reason your considering it, Don`t. Dogs are neutered to stop them from appropriating, as you know the American kennel club is against this procedure. I am for responsible dog ownership not the easy way out.Leave your dog in the condition nature made to be in.

There are things you can buy at pet stores that you spray, the dogs love the smell, so if you put newspaper down then spray it. Your dog will learn to go on the bathroom on the paper. Eventually move the paper step by step outside. He will learn to go to the bathroom outside.

male dogs mark when answering to another male dog. they want to be the "high and mighty" if you will. so make sure you don't have another male dog that isn't doing the same thing. neutering won't fix your problem once they've already learned. are your nuts attached to you're nose?

It's a good idea. "Fixing" a dog actually makes them healthier in the long run and when people ask me how I can do that I tell them that I got myself "fixed" when I was in my 20's. I did. I'm fine.
