If your jeep has 4-wheel drive, it's an automatic 4-wheel drive system. This means that if your jeep detects that one of the wheels are slipping, the 4-wheel drive will automatically send power to the wheel that has the most traction (either the front or rear). It's and automatic system, you can't turn 4-wheel drive on. BUT, if you want to go in to 4-wheel drive low range, put the car in neutral, pull the handle next to the gear selector, and wait for a beep (it means 4-wheel drive low is active). To disengage, do the same thing.

Depending on your option package your jeep either has quadra-drive or quadra-trac. Quadra-drive is full time 4WD which means that you do not have to do anything to put it into 4WD. It senses wheel slip and automatically engages the 4WD for you. However you are able to place the vehicle in 4WD low range for more pulling power offroad. The Quadra-Trac system is full time and part time. Allowing you to select a full time 4WD option or part time 4WD.

Your owners manual will explain all of the details on these systems if you are unsure of which system your jeep has, its real simple to tell.

Quadra-Drive has 4WD all time, Neutral, and 4WD Low.
Quadra-Trac has 4WD Part Time, 4WD Full Time, Neutral, and 4WD. Low.
