Put spent household cooking oil or grease in a covered jar or can with lid and toss it in the trash.

If you pour it down the drain, it goes into the water supply.

Cooking oil is biodegradable. It is consumed by bacteria as a food source and will not significantly injure the environment.
It can plug your drains though.
