or can the attitude of 'you are going to hell'.. 'if only you would let me fix your life'... 'I will pray for you as soon as I am alone.. that you will see the error of your ways'....

Can the attitude, however subtle and hidden the Christian think it is.... Can that turn people away just as much as bible thumping?

If any group, religious or not, has a high and mighty attitude, that would turn anyone away. When I was in third grade there was a girl scout troop that all the "cool" girls belonged to. The ringleader's mother was the troop leader and she wouldn't let anyone else in unless it was a friend of her daughter's. All the girls in the troop thought they were better than everyone else because they were in the troop, but there were other troops to join as well, not just theirs. No one wanted to join their troop because the other troops offered the same thing, but with nicer people. An over-conceited attitude would turn anyone away from any group.

Blessed Be.

Unfortunately, yes, I think it does. A "I'm better than you" attitude will turn people off in a heartbeat.

Christ said that He was a servant, and His attitude showed it. He always met people at the point of their need, whether it was healing, spiritual growth, or life changes.

He was capable of saying strong things, but with great love and compassion. He was also very down to earth and the exact opposite of what most people thought a religious leader should be. He described Himself like this, ". . .I am meek and lowly in heart." (Matthew 11:29a)

That's the example we're supposed to be following -- not lording it over others.

Yours is actually a very sane question. It brings up the question as to why Arabs are so deeply involved with Islam, while Christians as a majority are passive, Christian in name only, or down right belligerent towards the church?

Without getting too anal, I've heard that pure Christianity is really not compatible with western democracy, and neither is Islam. Something to ponder; I'm still trying to find more on this train of thought.

It is the beauty of the Lord and the perfect love of the Father that attracts people to Christianity. However, I wouldn't say that all Christians represent God in the best possible way.

Similarly, the true Christians aren't affected by the winds of doctrines or other peoples' opinion.

The GOP? No. yet there are rather some extremely social values conservatives who will be very pleased to vote for the bible-thumping duo. Being a Christian, or the different faith, is positive. utilising God and faith to get votes is despicable. Christians must be indignant through the way Perry has been utilising their faith to get votes.

Its a huge conglomeration of things that make people turn away. For me it was being able to see past the things I was 'taught' to believe and see the real truths about life. There are more than one ofcourse.
One is that death is a part of life and people who believe in God have an obvious fear of it. They are willing to believe the wildest of stories to make the moment seem more spectaular than it really is and that somehow they go on living in some magical place like it never happened.
I worked in a tissue procurement team for a while and believe me, you can be doing absolutely nothing wrong and your life can end at any second. There are thousands of ways to die and its all unpredictable. I've seen babies, children, men, women, black people, white people, all ages, all different. Car crash, overdose, drowning, suffocation, heart attack, blunt trauma, the list goes on... Death is a part of reality that is too scary for some people.
Truth Two is that you have to take responsiblity for yourself and your own actions. Some mystery man in the sky washing all my sins away by shedding his blood makes me kinda queasy. I caught on to the blame game religion plays long ago and chose a different route. Praying is the same as wishing for something, like throwing a penny in a well, both a waste of time and money. I've found that if I Focus on my goals in life and make a plan of action towards those goals, if it fails, I must claim my mistakes - fix it - chart a new path.

Three is that people are pretty much all the same, we all want something to make our lives feel worthwhile. Accepting a religion because thats what you've been told to believe is a lazy persons lot in life.

We have these two preachers that come to my home every once in a while and try to get us to let them pick up our kids to take them to church on sundays. I have told them time and again that we don't go to church, we don't believe in god, we are not interested in sending our children to be taught to believe something that goes against our family's beliefs. Yet they keep comin' to the door. Now thats persistence! They act as if we are being bad parents by not giving in to them. As if they know better than us on how to raise our kids.
And I'm starting to wonder if I should ask them if I could pick up their children and bring them to my home for some tutoring in the form of my beliefs. I wonder how he would receive that?
All the claims of persecution from athiests is a crock.. I've met lots of holier-than-thou types, they are everywhere. It's because they have too much time on their hands. They have extra time to spare so why not micro-manage some people in the name of some imaginary guy in the sky. It makes them feel more important. And If things go wrong, they will say it was Gods will anyway instead of taking responsibility for their own actions.

There are more truths to life than these, too many to mention here. Turning away from religion has freed me. I'm hopeful that more people will do the same. If I could show religious people one thing, it would be that just because a person doesn't believe in god doesn't mean they are not a good person.

I really don't see that in my church. But I have heard it happens. Not all Christians have that attitude. But I imagine people let things like that turn them off of God. I am a Christian and even I admit to God that he sometimes seems real lame because of how others portray him. I probably can't blame them for my view.

I think most people desire a relationship with God (or at least want to wrestle with is their a God) . . . but the church seems to keep getting in the way. The people who are supposed to represent him . . . well . . frankly . . don't look that attractive to the rest of the world. think non-believers think if that's all they have to look forward to is being arrogant and condescending then it's not worth the effort. It took me a long-time to learn about and accept the love of God and that Jesus is loving and very likable (unlike the church today). His truths may not have been popular, but he loved people and they liked him nonetheless. Now that certainly isn't true today . . how many representatives of Christ come across as someone you 'like' and enjoy spending time with - regardless of their beliefs - not enough that is for sure.

The only thing more repulsive than Bible thumping is the content of the book itself.
