I know that in the Middle East women cover themselves for religious reason. Does Islam affect how Muslim women are portrayed in fine arts and literature and if so how?

They aren't!?!?

Moslems don't portray anyone!?!?

Least of all their women!?!?

Art and Literature in Islam????

Aren't you joking????

Those are frowned upon, at least!?!?

The only thing they allow is the Praise of Mohammad and his madness!?!?

Nothing Artistic nor Literature-ish about that!?!?

Haven't you noticed the language and intellectual abilities of the Moslems here????

I dont know why people are so blind in passing baseless judgements that show how much ignorant and arrogant they are.

Many of the YA Users who answered it are blindfolded by the CNN and the BBC. What they know about Islam is utter Non-sense as the western media does NOT show the TRUTH about Islam.

Arts and literature???

Do you know that the Quran is an excellent piece of Arabic literature that has NO parallel with any Arabic book till date?

Muslims and Non-Muslims alike accept the lucid presentation of the Quran. The Quran is the ONLY book in the whole world that is unchanged for 1427 years.

Imagine a Book of hundreds of pages being memorized by millions across the globe irrespective of their caste, region or languages. Even 6-8 years old children have done this!

Now coming to the Arts, during the caliphate of Umar, Uthman and Ali, the Muslim world had un-parallled acrhitecture which EUROPE didnt have! The Muslim Spain - Andalusia is an example of what the Muslims did for Europe.

Spain still has the largest Mosque in the World.

With regards to women, Islam protects women by covering them in Hijab. Why is the crime rate against women in the US the highest in the world??? And what about the Islamic countries? Doesnt that show what Hijab has done?

The Hijab is a sort of protection for women, it doesnt subjugates her status. Muslim women can study, work, do business just like any other female but they do it in Hijab.

Only Saudi Arabia and Iran have laws that require women to cover up. Even then, Iran's movie industry is one of the best known in the Middle East. In Saudi Arabia, women wear a scarf, but they can keep their faces uncovered. In all other Middle Eastern countries, covering up isn't necessary.

What is not shown is erotica and porn and other obscenity.

There are a hell lot of Egyptian movies and dramas, and quite a few from Syria, Lebanon, and the UAE too.

I would suggest asking this question in the Saudi Arabia or United Arab Emirates sub section in the Travel>Middle East and Africa section.
You'll get a lot more answers there.

It is very simple it is against Islam to make a pic of any living being. Things like plants, sea, sky and such designs like shapes and stuff are ok.
