I gained some weight during the holidays, and for the first time have a slight belly. I never tried losing weight, and would like to know it is more beneficial to do cardio before or after lifting wieghts to lose weight faster.

It really depends on what your goals are. If you're wanting to lose bodyfat the fastest, I'd say work out weights first. When you're done with weights, your body is somewhat depleted of glycogen so it must dig into your bodyfat for energy. The only downside is that if you're trying to build muscle, this may interfere with that.

It is ALWAYS better to lift weights after you do your cardio routine. This ensures that your muscles are warmed up. Also, lifting after cardio will help you burn additional calories. You burn calories during your cardio session, then your body slows down during your cool down and in the minutes between cardio and lifting. When you start your lifting session, your body has to work even harder to lift, thereby burning calories WHILE buildling muscle (think of it as putting your body through interval training - first interval is cardio, second interval is lifting).

Working out this way will help you build lean muscle quickly without bulking up too much - essentially, you will shed excess pounds faster this way.

The best thing to do is cardio in the morning, and weight training later in the day. Or do them on different days altogether. If you don't have the time, then do cardio AFTER weights. If you do cardio first, you risk wearing yourself out for proper weight training.

I do it before. If you're running it's best not to lift weights first, because doing so can tighten your muscles, throwing off your stride and causing over-use injuries.

You should lose weight at about the same rate regardless of which one you do first.
