Hi there...cats sleep on average between 16-20 hours a day. Most wild cats use huge amounts of energy when they hunt and they need to conserve energy in between their hunting activity. When a cat (or any living thing for that matter) sleeps, it uses very little energy. The longer a cat sleeps, the more energy it conserves and the less often it has to hunt. Although today's domestic cats don't really need to hunt, their genes are still the same as before we took them into our homes as pets.

Kittens tend to sleep just as much or more than grown cats. This is primarily due to the fact that growth hormone is only released during sleep.

The actual diet of a cat is also a factor. Cats are carnivores. Eating meat makes you sleepy and anyone who's just had a huge steak can attest to this.

I agree that they seem lazy....but that is seeing them in human terms. If you watch nature shows about 'big cats' (cougars, leopards, cheetahs ,etc.) you will notice that they are just like our domesticated little friends. Cats relax & sleep in preparation for the short bursts of extreme activity needed to hunt & capture prey.

I know that the 'Iams' or 'Friskies' doesn't present much of a challenge....but that is not our cats' fault. It is normal for domesticated felines to sleep 16-18 hours a day.

However, if you have ever watched a cat face off against a dog 10-20 times it's size....then blaze across the yard to a tree where a safe perch waits 10 feet above the ground...you have seen how potential (lazy) energy turns into kinetic (hyper-drive) energy.

Long live the lazy and wise cats....zzzzzzzzzzz.

The dog has always served man. All through history they have worked herding sheep, rescuing people, dragging people thru snow. Today they aid the handicapped and do dangerous jobs like sniffing out drugs and bombs. So we would say the dog is an intelligent creature serving mankind well. The cat does nothing, The cat lives for comfort. I have one right here that wants to perch on my shoulder. Because everything is furniture for them. I love cats and dogs but think cats are smarter cause they do nothing and could care less what anyone thinks.

Cats are carnivores. They "conserve" their energy except when it is needed to find food or amusement.

Garfield once said, "Eat and sleep, Eat and sleep, There must be more to a cat's life but I hope not."

Cats arent lazy, there just very calm cool and collected animals. They dnt stress about things they just go with the flow, may seem like animals have it easier than us but they dnt. they have to worry bout getting into fights, fending off dogs cars etc. They just dont stress bout anything we should all take a note from them :) cheers

Lazy? I think not.

Squirrels are lazy. They actually sleep more than cats do. A little known fact. But now you know. :o)
