Just make sure you carefully research all of the characteristics of a beagle before you get one! I have fostered beagles and I own a beagle/dachschund mix, and I will tell you this: like all hounds, they like to follow a scent. Make sure you have a fenced in area for him or her to play in, but don't ever leave a beagle (or any dog) unsupervised outside all day. Beagles love to dig, and they love to run. You will definitely need to have your pup leashed at all times while on walks. And do be aware they that have a tendency to "bay" when they are playing, and sometimes when they are left alone. Other than that, they make wonderful pets. If you are getting a puppy and you socialize him well, you can be reasonably sure that he will do well with children and other adults. But I will tell you this: keep a tag with your info and phone number on him always, and microchip your pet as soon as possible. Don't forget to register your information with the microchip company immediately- the vet does not do that automatically. I found a wonderful beagle a few years ago; he was just walking down the street all alone and his nails were so worn down and dirty I just knew he had dug out of someone's yard. I never did find the owner (he had no collar or tags on) but I was able to place him with a wonderful family that had two young boys that adore him. Good luck!

Beagles come in two varieties – those that are under 13 inches and those that are over 13 inches. Members of the Hound Group, these furry companions have moderate energy levels and are capable of being quiet when properly trained. Beagles play well with both children and other pets, as they are blessed with a patient, fun-loving disposition. They make great indoor or outdoor pets! Typical coloring is tan and black, lemon or red. Beagles may or may not bear white markings.
When bringing a beagle into your family, one of your first responsibilities is to provide a secure yard for the dog. Even if you plan to keep your beagle indoors, she'll need a secure area for potty purposes. Beagles are notorious for their curiosity and their great sense of smell. If your beagle gets a good whiff of something that catches her fancy, instinct will assume control and she'll be gone. When planning your fence, keep in mind that beagles can dig their way out of a yard. You should put a hedge in front of your fence (or have a line of cement under your fence) to deter your beagle from leaving.
You should take your beagle to the veterinarian for vaccinations. At this time, talk with your vet about worming and flea and tick control products. You should also follow up with booster vaccinations when needed. Talk with your vet about health problems that can sometimes afflict beagles, such as retinal atrophy, cataracts, polyarthritis, congestive heart failure, hypothyroidism, epilepsy and glaucoma
Beagles should not be fed "people" food. Beagles do best on a high-quality, dry dog food. Regularly eating people food often causes these small creatures to pack on the pounds, which can be detrimental to their health.
Play or exercise with your beagle at least an hour a day. This will provide a productive outlet for his energy, and he'll thrive under the attention.
Beagles do not require much in the way of grooming. Many people choose a beagle over other breeds because they are low-maintenance. This does not mean that you should let Fido go without a bath, though. Beagles shed year-round. How often your beagle will need a bath will be determined by her living conditions. Outdoor beagles will require more regular bathing than beagles that are indoor dogs. Whether indoor or outdoor, brush your beagle two or three times each week. Many beagle owners state that using a hound’s glove is the best way to keep shedding under control.
Beagles’ ears droop and hang, promoting accumulation of dirt. You should clean your beagle’s ears every time you brush him to keep your dog’s ear free of infection and odor.
Anyone who has beagles should start training them early. This establishes the dog’s place in the family so that she won't forget you are the boss. While beagles can be independent, with consistency they can be trained.

Beagles tend to pull at the leash, be a bit difficult to train, and they will never be "off leash" dogs, as they are really driven by their noses. If treated right, they are good around all kinds of people, pets, and children. Be sure to purchase your puppy from a reputable breeder and not a pet store, and make sure to socialize it well to strangers, other dogs, traveling in the car, and all sorts of situations so the dog will be comfortable around everything as an adult. Beagles do require lots of exercise, due to their working heritage, so be prepared for lots of walks.
Hope this helps...

I have a Beagle myself, first off you might want to get a fence-in yard if you dont already have one because they will run away really easily. They will howl when a stranger comes around. They are usually fine with children and other dogs, sometimes even cats. I have never regretted getting a Beagle and I hope its the same with you!

Sure, they are really cute BUT make sure you know what you are getting into. I see a TON of beagles that end up in the shelter because of their owners not doing their research on their temperment.

Beagles are barkers, they bark at animals like squirrels, they are hunting dogs, so they jump, HIGH, i used to have a beagle, and he always jumped the fence,
So i suggest you have a high fence, or when you let him outside you go out with him and watch him closely.
They love to swim also, so when you give them a bath they try and swim.

Beagles are really nice but really energetic. They are good around most people but are not good travelers. They are the cutest little things I've ever seen.
