When somebody days the word "tightened" the dentist really isnt tightening it. What they do is put on a different or thicket wire that helps move your teeth slightly. Yes there is discomfort when you get a new wire every month. Everybody has their own level of pain but it wont be too bad.

Actually, I've heard the same thing, but I rarely feel anything when my braces get tightened. It's after the dentist puts the braces on for the first time...that pains for about a week. And whenever he puts anything new in there to make your teeth come together...yeah, that hurts a lot. I never go to school when I'm in that much pain. The beginning's the worst, but as he puts it on your teeth, it's not painful. It's the after-effect that's painful. Tightening isn't painful though...at least that's from my point of view. But you shouldn't be scared. It's really not that bad. I've had mines for over a year now and it's a part of who I am now. Good luck:)

I had braces for almost 5 years. No, you don't feel your teeth move. It can uncomfortable more than painful. I never needed anything other than orajel or ibuprofen and only for a day afterward. My son now has braces. He uses ibuprofen for about a day after he gets his tightened. What can be painful is not the tightening but the getting used to the roughness of the metal on the inside of your mouth. You may need wax to cover some of the sore spots. Good luck. It really is not that bad and well worth the little bit of discomfort.

He wasn't lying. Please grow up and get out from under the bed. Millions of people have gotten braces...and millions have them now. When you get your braces "tightened" it means that they are putting a shorter wire in your brackets so it will connect them altogether. You don't actually feel them move unless you get two teeth or more wired. Let me tell you...last time I went to the ortho I had a small gap between my two center bottom teeth. The orthodontist wired them together and I could feel them move. When I looked in the mirror when he was done, the gap was already gone. So yes your teeth could move right then and there. And yes it is painful but just take some tylenol or ibuprofen a couple hrs. before you go. It won't hurt getting them on right then and there, but it will sure hurt that night! I couldn't eat for days =]
It's gonna be all worth it tho! I get mine off @ the beginning of this summer...and I'm actually going to the ortho tomorrow!
=D Good Luck

I was always a little sore when they tightened my braces but it was never to the extreme your friend described. If you do have an experience like that, you should call your orthodontist, they can make smaller adjustments in order to lessen the discomfort. My braces moved my incisors from the tops of my gums to the appropriate place and I never had the pain your friend described, and my teeth had to move over 3/4 of an inch down and I never felt that my teeth were moving.
No worries, you'll be glad of them at some point. They can be a pain while you have them, but your beautiful smile will be worth the price later.

Oh no, he wasn't lying. It hurts like hell. But of course, the pain is only temporary and straight teeth are totally worth it. You can take some Tylenol or something to make yourself feel better. The tightening is only once a month anyway.

Sorry - he is telling them the truth - it helps if you take some type of pain reliever an hour before you go and get them tightened and then every four hours for at least 2 days - it really helps -good luck@!!~

It is uncomfortable but not unbearably painful. Your teeth will be sensitive so watch what you eat for a few days after each tightening.
