Start with jotting down what you like about the home, what you dont and what you need. see if you can convert what you dont into what you need. (we pulled down two small rooms to make an open dining room facing the family room. it is very convenient now. )

We went through remodelling our home which included pulling down some walls, re-doing the kitchen from scratch, building a another room. if you are about to pull down walls, make sure you have the required know-hows (about the lad bearing walls etc) and check if the end result will be as per your liking.

We too started with a tight budget. but with the things available in the market, it is hard to stick to it. but, keeping the budget in focus gave us some kind of self-control and made us look in the range that we could afford.

We took two whole months to decide what we wanted to do and it took us 6 months to get it done. it has left some scars on the home, but the place looks amazing and is so much more comfortable.

If you are on a very limited budget (<$2000) remodeling your kitchen or bath is out of the question. If you would like to just change the appearance of one or two rooms, then consider painting or papering. Perhaps updating the front door to a natural looking fiberglass. Or even a couple of window (nothing says that you have to do them all at once, mine took 5 years to complete). New floor coverings in one or two rooms might be nice. Of course you could change window coverings. There are a lot of small projects that could be done for not much money.

the two most important things
whatever your budget is , you will go over it
whatever timeline you give or are given..you will go over it
In major remodels there are always unforseen issues that crop up and they usually cost money to deal with, not to mention things or selections you may change your mind on midway through the project. If you are not using a general contractor ,you will probably screw up the scheduling of the trades . good luck remodels can be a nightmare unless you are very open to setbacks, delays and inconveniences...(I am a contractor and have done hundreds of remodels and all have unforseen suprises

Kitchen and bathroom projects bring you the best return. HGTV is a great source of inspiration.
