Trust this advice coming from a Registered Dietitian, carbohydrates are your bodies main source of energy. Your brain can only run on carbohydrates (which is why your body breaks down muscle and fat so quickly when you restrict carbs). It is unhealthy to completely elminate any food group. The key of eating carbohydrates are choices ones that are complex vs. simple. An easy why to tell the difference is whole wheat, whole grains, and foods which fiber (such as fruits and vegetables) are complex carbohydrates which keep you feeling full longer. Fiber not only helps you to feel full but it can also help to lower you LDL cholesterol (the bad one) and raise your HDL (the good one). Cutting back on simple carbohydrates are foods that are sugary or refined like white breads, white rice and candy, sweets, and sodas. Making this changes will help you be healthier, keep your brain alert, give you more energy and make a difference in your waist line!!!!

What happens is your body will eventually start to run on the fats that are provided in your diet, and then, when that source of energy runs out, eventually your body will start to digest the proteins needed for amino acid production, thus increasing your risk for a DNA replication malfunction, and possibly even an increased risk of cancer. However, it's almost impossible to increase both fats and carbs from your diet unless you take only protein supplements and shakes and avoid all other foods, and if you are a work out fiend. HOWEVER, just as a warning, the man who created the Atkins diet intended it for small amounts of time, like just before a wedding, etc., because long term use can lead to what he died from - heart attack.

You will get tired, cranky, start developing headaches and then if long enough your brain might start to shut down, since your brain needs at least 60 grams of carbs a day to function. Not sure on time though.

I did that once; it's COMPLETELY unhealthy to completely eliminate any food group out of your diet. But after a week, I dropped about 5-6 pounds (I can't recall..)?
