In order for a spike to stay up it requires one or both of the following - a strong fixative, a strong base. Good fixatives include, gel, wax, hair spray, bar soap and water soluble glue. Bear in mind that soap and any styling product containing alcohol will fade your colour if used repeatedly. Gel works best on hair up to about 3 inches long but when combined with hair spray can be used easily on hair up to 5 or 6 inches. Wax is good for messy looks which don't need to hold exactly in place. Hair spray can be used on really short hair for spiking but is best used to finish and hold a style already created with another product. Soap is a good cheap alternative to other products but is best used only occasionally and definitely not on a rainy day. Glue is said to be the best to spike really long hair and can hold for days, but check that it washes out before you use it.

For really long hair you will need a large base for the spike which will help support it. You will probably find that it's best not to put any product on the inch closest to your scalp as this can make the hair limp and it becomes difficult to hold the spike up.

well usually its very hard so spike long hair. hair that is too long has too much weight. but if u use the right products, like something sticky like paul mitchell lab glue, then blow dry hair where u want it. then i would hair spray the crap outa it and flat iron it in place. that would be the only way u could prob get it to stay.

Elmers glue and water worked for the mohawk I had back in the 80's.
