What would you suggest I name a dog that is mixed with Chihuahua and Rat Terrier. She is black and tan and an older dog of 5 years.

Believe it or not your dog is still a youngster! Chihuahuas and small terriers can live well into their teens. She must be unbelievably cute. I would give her a sophisticated name that is Spanish. How about Isabella? Or Margerita (which is also a Mexican tequila drink!)

I know it's often impossible to know an older dogs original name if adopted from a rescue pound but if you could find that out, she would respond better to it. If you know her original name but don't like it, you could name her something that sounds similar to it & she'll respond just as well (dogs often get commands like 'stay' & 'shake' mixed up because they sound alike) Also, watching her personality for a few days sometimes helps to come up with a befitting name. My moms rat terriers were "Zippo" & "Spunky" & my friends Chihuahuas were "Fiesta" & "Pinata" sp? (that party toy kids whap to get the treats out)

If I were you, I'd wait for a couple of days and let a name come to you! When i got my puppy which is a chihuahua i just let her adjust to her new surroundings for a couple of days and the next thing i new we were calling her buttercup and it happens to fit her perfectly. Also remember the day you adopted the puppy what was the day like or how did you get the puppy was it lucky to have you, is the puppy shy?...etc...

If you happen to know her name but don't like it, then change it to something that sounds similar. That way, it won't be so hard for her.
also, there is a cool website that has searched and listed a lot of names for dogs. Check it out.
