Many flags in our town are still at half staff. Is there a general rule of thumb on how long to fly a flag at half staff and does the length of time vary depending on who the deceased is? For example, a president versus the disaster of 9/11?

I believe it is 30 days for the death of the president. However, when reading an article a few weeks back I saw something about bush declaring 30 days of mourning for the death of the president. I think generally the president makes the call, and I'm sure congress may play a part in it if it is a current president who dies. Overall, I think 30 days is the max, so lesser disasters may have less time.

properly, that's been longer than per week and Pres Ford has already been buried, so that you recognize the first 2 solutions are incorrect!!! The flag flies at 1/2 crew for a month following the lack of existence of a president.

The apropreciate amount of time is 30 days, it is out of respect to the president who passed and to our American country. God Bless the USA! Best Wishes!

I dunno, but I think it's ridiculous to fly it for more than say, 2 weeks. from what others said, it's 30 days, but it's also like, get over it! The guy's dead, and it's not like he was a magnificent leader who only did good. Oh well, whatever.
