It depends on how you serve it. If you're serving with the bone in then you need at least 10 ribs (1/person), remembering that the end servings will be well done. If you have your butcher bone the roast and then tie it together w/the bones you can just carve the roast and serve thin slices which will make it go farther. But leftovers are ok so 10 ribs would still be good.

You would want to buy a rib roast that has at least 5 upto 7 ribs, this would be 11 to 18 lbs. You can feed approximately 2 people on 1 rib. If you need some ideas on how to cook the roast visit http://www.giftwrapandmore.com/

At the very minimum, plan on 1/2 pound of meat per person, taking into account the weight of the ribs in the overall roast. Then, you have to think about something no one else has mentioned: will you serve the meat or will it be open for your guests to serve themselves? Meaning, will this party be buffet-style, family-style, or formal? If you serve the guests individually, less food will be consumed. If the guests are able to serve themselves (whether at a buffet dinner or where the food is on the same table where they eat) more food will be consumed.
So, minimum 5 pound roast (not counting the weight of the ribs) -- or a max of 10 pounds to ensure seconds for everyone.

If you are cooking a standing rib it is very important that you buy a large roast. You can't go by the handy six ounce or four or eight ounce per person formulas. Thirty years as a chef says minimum 6 pound roast. 275 degrees until the internal temp reaches 110 degrees. Let stand for at least 30 minutes before carving.
This is enough for 6 to 8 people.
Add a pound per person because of the bone.

I can answer that because that is what I did for Christmas.
I asked the butcher and he said to get a 5-rib roast. Figure serving 2 people with each rib. If you want leftovers, get a six rib roast. Make sure you ask for the BEST cut so you don't get a ton of fat.
Another thing I did was to have the butcher cut off the bones and then tie them back on for flavor. It worked great for me because all I had to do was cut the string and then slice the roast. No hassle with removing ribs.
Good luck and have fun. Wish I were there. It's my favorite meal.

1/2 pound of meat per person, but you might as well buy extra and have leftovers. Also, keep in mind the roast has a bone, so I think a 10 pound roast should do. Mmmm, roast beef sandwiches!

For 10 people I would use a 14 to 15 pound roast and would use semi-boneless. The meat gets a little flavor from the bone.

You will need to go a good store [ wal-mart does not have it I tried] . Ask someone in the meat department they will show them to you and have tips for cooking. If you want to check them out first go to the beef section and look for a cut of meat that looks like a very large pork chop they will cost a lot ! I make them for Christmas they are easy to cook and very tender. They may be labled rib roast [prime]. Be sure to ask for help They may only have 2 or 3 cause they cost so much but they are worth it ! Sorry the first two answerers were not so helpful.

When you're shopping, figure on eight to 10 ounces of uncooked, boneless meat per person. Increase that to 12-15 ounces per person if the roast has bones. Invariably this means you'll have some leftovers.

10-12 pound roast should do it. figure 8-12 ounces per person, and consider bone and excess fat
for a dinner party it is best to have leftovers and satisfied diners than to make them leave hungry.
