If that were entirely true, how would they know that owning slaves is bad, raping is bad, abortion is bad,
drug abuse is bad, birth control?
it doesn't meantion MANY things in the bible which a reasoning mind has to weigh out the ethics to these days,
like invitro fertilization, whether to continue to torment and prick a premature infant with needles though it will most probably die just to keep it living and suffering longer, why?
Or to keep a person in a vegetative state with their mouth agape for decades having to be fed through a feeding tube,
who will pay for those bills when their parents are dead?that plug is pulled in a heartbeat.
Does the bible have anything to say about that?
I can go on, you get the idea...

Jane, I had to answer this because of your excellent answer on "Is the catholic church the best?"

Catholics do not derive our moral compass from the Bible directly. We believe that, yes, the Bible is the inspired word of God, but we DO NOT recognize the idea that the last act which God was capable of using to inspire the world was the creation of the Bible... nor do we believe that the Bible was intended to be a complete guideline of the church, being that things which were common practice (Sacred Tradition) at the time would have been left out for brevity.

Much of Sacred Tradition ties in with the Bible, however. For example: the catholic belief that contraceptives are morally wrong for other than medical condition treatment is based on the story of the sin of Onan. Abortion is based on the Commandment: "thou shalt not murder." For other things we rely on the traditions passed down from generation to generation of the church.

Finally, we also recognize the ability of God, in the form of the Holy Spirit, to influence the Catholic church. The pope, when speaking ex cathedra (from the chair) on matters of dogma ONLY, is believed to be speaking under the influence of the Holy Spirit. Therefore all teachings of Dogma from a Pope speaking ex Cathedra are considered infallable. No DOCTRINE in the Catholic church has ever been changed. Of course, there is a definite distinction between doctrine and discipline (which can be changed and is not infallable). For example, priests being celebate is a discipline and one day we MAY see married priests brought back into service. The doctrine of Mary as a lifelong virgin is considered infallable and therefore unchangeable. The church will always teach that Mary remained a Virgin her entire life (protestants have a problem with that teaching... I don't know why. If you can believe that Jesus could rise from the dead or that the world was created in seven days, how hard is it to accept that a woman influenced directly by God could go without sex?).

I realize that Yahoo answers is not the best place to discuss these types of things. I accept messages if you'd like me to clarify anything, and in sources I have posted a link to a good catholic forum where anyone can ask (respectfully) questions about the catholic church to some of the brightest, most educated catholics I know.

Personally I think the Bible speaks to every issue, either through a direct statement or though principle. But there are extenuating circumstances in a lot of issues and the Bible actually writes a whole book on what to do where there is no law to cover an issue. That book is called Proverbs and deals with principles for extenuating circumstances.

As Christians we try to follow the bible. You are right about some of the things you are asking about. We are human though and make many mistakes. Where do you get your moral compass? You know I'm sure, that we are to treat people the way we want to be treated. Jesus tells us that "In as much as you have done it unto the least of these, you have done it also unto me." Does that help? In the old testament we are told that we are to "Trust in the lord with all your heart and lean not to thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He will direct thy paths." Trusting and believing and having a personal relationship with Christ not only gives us eternal life but willingness to step out on faith and ask God for direction. Many times it is not the Christians that are making important decisions.
I suggest you talk to your pastor or someone that is living a Christian life. He/she will be able to help you with questions. God bless you.

So you are in favor of bumping off Granny and Grandpa when they get too old and needy, eh? The Bible clearly covers the sins that you have mentioned. It Takes years to study the bible correctly and when you finish start again because you missed something and you guys expect one paragraph that explains God and His Word. The golden rule "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" or Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your fellow man. And I don't own a slave now or ever plan on owning one, although my husband may disagree with me on that one.

truly, we would like more suitable understanding. What were they being suggested for? Marriage counseling? i'm able to for sure see the councilor being in competition to it, and justified in doing so. i am going to bypass over the former testomony and Jesus element 'motive through way of it you purely exhibit your lack of understanding of the gospel. comparing this to a well being practitioner is infrequently ever sensible on condition that it wasn't a existence and lack of existence hardship. actually a well being practitioner ought to no longer refuse medical care time-honored on the human beings sexual determination. the right analogy (and this has befell) is a well being practitioner refusing to participate in an abortion in cases in which it isn't existence and lack of existence. enable me ask, ought to you purchase an alcoholic a drink? would you promote a gun to a depressed personality? in case you assume the nature isn't splendid mentally (it particularly is how a Christian counselor ought to evaluate about a gay) then why ought to you do a touch element to help that personality in that mentality?

Your conscience, created by God, is your moral compass. The Bible reminds us of what we have already known since birth. People stray, are misled, get confused, deny, etc, however you want to put it, from the basic morals that are already ingrained in our conscience. The Bible reminds us and guides us to keep on the straight, true path.

christians dont realize, they are just blind people. no difference between them and those in the past, the only difference is that now law unables them to do what they would do if the church had so much power as it had. Crusades, Inquisition and so on are not thing of the past because christians chose it but because the rest chose it...If Catholic church was in control Inquisition would still be a reality

born again Christians have a moral compass living within them.
It is called the Holy Spirit.
The Bible also provides moral teaching, but Jesus (God) knew that would not be enough.
He told His disciples that before He ascended into Heaven.
That is why God the Father sent the Holy Spirit to indwell believers.
