because in the game of horseshoes, you get points for being closer to the pole in the ground. you don't have to get a ringer to score points.

Well, one thing, the saying goes, "close only counts for horse shoes and hand grenades." But anyway, the object to the game of horse shoes is to throw the horse shoe closer to the pin (pole) or what ever you wanna call it.

Standing to close to the pole you could get hurt, just the same as standing to close to a bomb.
