total child abuse! I heard that a kid had a reaction and died from this. No reason to ever do this to a child. He or she had to pick the bad words up some where and probably from the parents.

IT's considered child abuse now, but I don't think it was 5 years ago. I have had my mouth washed out with soap twice when I was younger. One time I told my dad to go to hell, the other time I said f**k out of frustration. I'm 21 and still won't cuss in front of my parents. Either I learned my lesson or I just have respect for my elders. Anyways, I guess putting soap in a kid's mouth can kill them or something.

Soap supposedly tastes nasty but I think it is just a saying or maybe, an act of punishment. It may not really be child abuse http://justice.gc.ca/en/ps/fm/childafs.html
But then again, if you ask me, soap can be toxic. It is not food and should not be ingested as can happen when they wash the child's mouth out with it.
Parents should be able to teach and discilpine their children in more civil ways and not even have to do this!

A bar or soap? Man.. It shouldn't be considered abuse. Its just unpleasant- And thats what punishment is supposed to be, receiving and unpleasant consequence for an undesirable action.
Where I am concerned abuse is some excessive action done in malice to that will cause irreparable damage. You can gargle the bad taste out with water.
Now making your kid fill their mouth with liquid detergent and daring them not to swalow is abuse because it is unreasonable to believe that they will be able to withstand not swallowing and consequently getting ill.

A parent would typically do this to "clean" a mouth that has spoken dirty words or inappropriately.
I would think since it's not particularly healthy and possibly emotionally damaging, it would be fall under abuse.

Because it's an effective parenting technique for children with inappropriate language. No, it's not abuse. Why? Because it's not harming them and it's teaching them a lesson.

It depends on what kind of soap--not all soap is edible. I think that sort of punishment is rarely done anymore, except maybe in the South.

I have 8 children and NEVER have I done that. It is child abuse and it can make kids very sick. It totally does not help matters at all. There are no reasons why you can't sit down with your child.
