For quite a long time I've been having hearing problems. It started out with me missing out words in speech and also missing notes in bass music.
I am at university as well and I sometimes can't hear the lecturer in a lecture theatre, even if they use a microphone.
It's now developed to the point where I was in an exam and I couldn't hear someone talking to me from 2 feet away in an almost silent room. I also was playing bass and missed almost two bars of the drums and I also find it difficult to differentiate between notes, especially F and G. I have also had pain in my ears and the feeling of being blocked.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is the problem? I'm desperate for an answer because I want to be able to play my bass guitar again.

I must add that I am going to the doctors on Thursday, but I just want to know what might be the problem before I go.

You need some advice about hearing conservation. See an ENT (ear, nose and throat doctor) and get a referral to an audiologist. You will end up being stone-deaf very soon if you don't take care of this. Wear ear plugs when you play, and get to the doc as fast as you can!

The doctor will probably check for earwax build up and flush your ears with water. They will probably do a hearing test also. Sounds like you have an earwax build up. But if you've been in an accident or have been hit in the ears, that sometimes cause hearing loss too. Be hopeful, like I said it sounds like just wax build. I'm a pianist (play by music, but mostly by ear). When I was 8 months pregnant with my youngest daughter, I lost my hearing in my left ear. The doctors don't know what happen. i have perfect hearing in my right ear. I was devastate, especially since I was musician and I depend on my ears to play. That was will be 7 years ago Feb.2. Today, I still play, I play the piano/keyboard for my church. Most people don't know I don't hear out of my left ear(I hide it pretty good). It still bothers me but I've adapted to it. Some day, I hope to get that cochlear ear transplant. I hope everything turns out o.k. for you.

I too had this problem and was often teased about having selective hearing.....it wasn't selective I just couldn't hear!
After having tests I now have a digital hearing aid....hearing in my left ear is significantly worse than my right. One of the settings is for a hearing loop....you will probably find that your lecture theatre offers this facility which enhances the sound considerably.
My hearing aid is small and discreet, easily disguised by hair if you are self conscious.
Please get yourself checked out now before your hearing deteriorates further.

If the F and G notes are being missed it is possible that you have some frequency damage to only one or two octaves of range but unlikely.

Go to an ear doctor.

They are most likey blocked with earwax-you need them syringed at the docs-loosen it first with a little olive oil each night-or u can buy drops from the chemist.
It happens to a lot of folk.
