Its activation of the sympathetic nervous system. It primes your body for action; it's the method of action for the flight or fight response. Controls breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, pupil dilatiion, sweating and other things. Right when its activated it causes all your muscles to contract and your body to freeze, that is the source of the feeling.

Are you afraid of heights? If so, that happens the same with me.

Maybe you are uncomfortable with heights so your brain is doing it. It may be some kind of self preservation to warn you of unsafety.

the brain is telling the body to rush all blood to the vitals it is the fight or flight mechanism when faced with danger, it happens to me when I hit my brakes to fast sometimes
