Every time I make a pitcher of smoothie with my blender, it comes out bad. They're grainy, rather than smooth and have no distinct taste. I want to know how to make a great smoothie. These're what I have to work with: a pitcher-sized blender, low-fat milk, flavored low-fat yogurt, kiwis, bananas, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, crushed ice, apples, oranges, and honey.

I like to juice 1 or 2 oranges and about half a grapefruit and put the juice in the blender first. You should make sure the blades are covered in liquid before you put any solids in, this way it will blend well, without all the solids getting "stuck." I don't like to put in ice because it never seems to blend well for me. Instead I use frozen fruit (sliced peaches, strawberries, raspberries, and huckleberries) to give it that slushier texture. Then I add a little bit of banana and some yogurt. If you don't want to juice oranges or grapefruit try using 100% juice instead, or milk if you like a creamier smoothie.

Kiwis, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, oranges will all make your smoothie grainy w/ their seeds, skins, and/or membranes.

The best thing for smooties, IMO, is frozen fruit. That way you dont' have to add crushed ice. The fruit makes it cold. Also, be sure every one has a banana. A banana adds silky "smooth" texture, and that's what you want, right?!

I'd use the juice of apples and oranges rather than the fresh fruits, unless you have a juicer machine. A regular blender is no match for their texture in a smoothie.

One of my favorites is just strawberries, bananas, crushed ice, and orange juice. I suppose you could use milk instead of orange juice.
