I'll like to redecorate the room of my 6 years old girl, but I want something durable at last until she's 12 years old.
Any great ideas?

You can paint the walls and the ceiling with blue light paint, and you can use stencils for paint some Glow in the Dark stars.

First use her favorite color, that way it will always be good. Then put money in the big things like bedding, make sure it is a design that will last, solid maybe, then add pillows that can be changed by recovering them if needed. You can paint any furniture by using primer first to make it last and change knobs and pulls to make them look updated. Never use novelty designs like Barbie, that will be outgrown in a few yrs., too soon. Let the room have color and design and add her favorite things which can change over time. You can change the floor by using throw rugs, again solid colors that can last, not anything novelty. Go through her toys and make three piles. Store, donate and keep. Have her help you and make decisions. don't keep things that she will never use, donate them and get a tax credit for next yr. Then she will understand the meaning of giving too. A valuable lesson. then buy storage bins for the closet, they last forever and make a place for everyghing. Do the same with clothes, three piles and she will have lots of room to grow into the room. Good luck. Remember, basics and good choices to last then small things to change when she gets a little older.

Well it all depends on how your daughter will perceives it as she gets older. She may think the butterfly thing is babyish when in fact you may love it. I would definitely make it girly but keep it clean so you can always change the look easily. A new linen set on the bed can change the way the whole room looks without really making any major changes. Update the window treatment to something a bit more mature as she gets older relatively inexpensive. Things like that. Definitely do not bind yourself to painted furniture that is costly to replace. They have these cool stick on designs that you can remove with a little water that adds a nice touch and easy to change. Good Luck!!

How about decorating in soft sage green and a rich blue...maybe do an outdoors-y theme...if you were really inspired you go do a mural on the wall with butteflies and whatnot.

It could be pretty and feminine and fun for a 6 yr old but still mature enough for a 12 yr old.

I too think the "Hello Kitty" theme is a good idea. With the blues and pinks (yellows..greens) you can always find ways to keep adding things for an older girl (fluffy pillows, bed netting, throw rugs, pretty lights...).

one of the best themes you can have for your daughter which will last her until she hits her teens is the Disney Princess theme. it includes all the disney princesses like cinderella, belle of beauty and the beast, snow white and sleeping beauty.

you can paint her room any soft pink or light lavander color.

put a disney princess boarder around the top of the wall and have a disney princess bedcover/bedsheet sheet set for her bed.
then add plain colored throw pillows and stuffed animals on the top of her bed. if her room has a window have a cute ruffled disney princess curtains put up on it. you can add a little princess rug by the foot of her bed as an accent.

what is great about this theme is you can buy them anywhere....online or in stores such as target. target and even walmart has all the decor for the disney princesses....they have clothes hangers, lamps, boarders, wall decorations, posters, throw rugs, little chairs, hair brushes and even tooth brushes.

and when her birthday or christmas comes you can get her a tent from ariel, the little mermaid, where she can house her stuffed animals and play house with.

there are small table and chairs also of the disney princess you can put in one corner of her room where she can sit and play with her dolls, eat her little snacks or draw her pictures.

on the walls, have a grouping of the disney princesses pictures frames and put up a disney princess height measuring chart when you can check her height every so often. you can get her some princess night clothes and sleepers which she would love when she goes to sleep on her princess bed.

have a couple of wall hangers of the same theme for her to hang her coats, hats or little disney princess unbrella. on her night table, put her little disney princess lamp and a picture frame with the family picture or her little pet in it.

she will love her princess theme and she won't outgrow it for many years.....my granddaughters are about her age and older and still love their room. i guess, it is every little girls dream to be aprincess and even when they grow up they may decide to become a doctor or lawyer, but that little princess will always be part of them.

You could get some paint that when it dries is like chalkboard. It dries black and then you could decorate it with a light pink. This would keep it girly for a little girl but also sophisticated for a teenager. Then she could draw on it as a girl, but wouldn't have to as a teenager, it would just look black.

How about painting it her favorite color(s) and just use what "she's into now" for accents? My Little Pony, Dora, Barbie etc. comforter set. Or maybe solid bedding and just buy character pillows, lamp shades & different accent pieces. Use the less expensive accent pieces, so that you can just change THEM when she outgrows them and moves onto something else:) They just grow up toooo fast:(
Good Luck!!

How about asking your daughter for her opinions? Ask her of her likes and dislikes. How about putting up a big framed bulletin board on one of the walls where both of you could decorate and she can put up her artworks, pictures and stuff there?
