In France we just used to say, "Que ce vas?" which is sort of slang for
"howayudoin". as we say here.

The text-book way would be "Comment vous portez-vous" but a frenchman would consider this pretentious.

If you intend to travel in different countries it would help a lot to got to the library or even seek out a person from the country you inyend going and ask them to write down "colloquiilisms" in their language and then practice saying them properly.

More on this in a minute. By the way if you just type in:

www.bablefish.altavista.com

you will get a nice free program in which you just type in the English and choose the language you like, even Russian and you will get your instant translation.

And, here is a bonus for you. Supposing you wanted to read any newspaper or website in a foreign language in order to practice a little. All you have to do in Babelfish is type in the website and it will give you the entire newpaper or site in THAT language.

For example, type in www.nytimes.com VOILA ! you will get the New York Times in French or Italian...a good chance to learn and practice your language skills.

I use google's translation tool. If you go to google.com, to the right of the search box near the top of the screen, you'll see a link that says "language tools". Click on that, and you can type in what you want to say in whatever language (and can translate something to English from another language, as well). Then select the language - i.e. English to German, or German to English, etc. and hit 'Translate' or whatever the button's labeled.

I agree with those who said "comment ca va?". It's the most safe phrases to use to express the same thing. Also, you can say, "ca va bien?", which literally would be "is it going well?".
