My regular dentist tried and could not do it and is sending me to a specialist.

What should I expect?

First of all, what is a really deep root canal?
Whether your Dentist of an Endodontist does it, it's a root canal. Your tooth may have blocked canals or really curved roots. Are you older? (>65) If so, canals tend to be tough to find. Or, your tooth may have been traumatized with multiple filling and a crown.. this can cause canals to shrink too. An Endodontist does these types of teeth exclusively so they have lots of experience. Also, they may have a very powerful Microscope which helps them negotiate these canals too. The good thing is that your general dentist had the wherewithal to know that he/she couldn't do the best job and referred you to a specialist. Don't worry, Specialists are much faster than general dentists so you should be in and out in about an hour. How's that sound?

You are being sent to an endodontist. They strictly do root canal. Don't worry, it won't hurt. It is similar to having a cavity, but instead, they clean out the dead pulp. They then fill it with a material, to prevent recontamination of the tooth. Once completed, they will use a mix to cover up the tooth to see if it is ok, usually six weeks. They will then put a filling over it, or do a crown.
