Dictionary definition of the word CULT:

1 : formal religious veneration : WORSHIP
2 : a system of religious beliefs and ritual; also : its body of adherents
3 : a religion regarded as unorthodox or spurious; also : its body of adherents
4 a : great devotion to a person, idea, object, movement, or work (as a film or book); especially : such devotion regarded as a literary or intellectual fad

It all fits. Each one of these fits christianity (yes, even #3...any religion with their history of murder, killing, burning people at the stake, warring and raping/molesting children...is definitely "unorthodox), too...)

Why deny the English language? That is the definition of the word CULT. Maybe some don't like it because they PERSONALLY have associated something negative with the word CULT. And, admittedly, there is quite a bit of negativity to associate with christianity, and that is their own fault.

But, IT IS A CULT.

So, what's the big deal???

Sorry "professor" -- but as with any DEFINITION of a word -- all that is required for it to be a valid definition is for that word to fall under ONLY ONE of the coded entries. It clearly falls under MORE than ONE, and arguably all of them.

And, as I said, with its spotty, murderous history, and the hatred and killing it spurns/encourages today, it is certainly unorthodox. look at all the child rape and molestation alone! what more do you need for unorthodoxy within that cult!! thousands upon thousands of young victims not enough?? holy moley!!

LOL :)

Just like all christians believe their particular flavor of superstition is "right" and all the others are wrong, they also all think everybody else is in a "cult" and they're not. Both beliefs are equally flawed. :)
Peace.

Counterfeit Christianity is probably the best description I can give for a cult. Counterfeit Christianity is an imitation of real Christianity. Bible terms like "Jesus Christ, Resurrection, Salvation, and Atonement" are used by the Cult, but the various cult groups have assigned entirely different meanings to these terms.
Like counterfeit money which is sometimes difficult to detect, so it is difficult to detect counterfeit Christianity, since it looks like the real thing. Experts examining counterfeit money often hold it up to a strong light and look for identifying marks. Counterfeit Christianity also has identifying marks, which can be seen when, held up to an even stronger light, the light of God's word, the bible.
We are at an advantage if we know what to expect from a cult. Cultists are very well trained to appear "Christian", and indeed believe they are the true churches, and you need the deliverance! Therefore, be bold and ask the question, "do you believe the group you represent is the only true church on the face of the earth?"
If they reply that they are, or if they are evasive, making remarks like "Well, every church has a measure of truth but...", you have made an early detection of a Cultist.
Every true Christian, if asked the same question, regardless of his denomination, would reply that the true church is comprised of believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, and HE (not some organization) is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE, (John 14:6). No legitimate denomination would claim that they alone and their members have salvation exclusively, but the cults (the counterfeits) do.

The big deal is that in a cult the religion is usually secondary to the worship of the person who is teaching the religion and not the teaching. When you put anything including any person above God and your beliefs then you are commiting a sin, that is the problem with organized religion and not Chriatianity. To be a Chriatian means to believe in Christ. that is all. Not a cult, which you are stating it is. I believe in Chriat and I am not a church going person. I am a Christian....not a cultist. I don't believe anyone can tell me how to believe the words of the Bible. that is my job. I don't kill and I don't judge. So, you are putting all christians in a pile and telling us we are a cult. What does that say about you? That you are the all knowing, judgemental person who can tell us all what we are? I think not. You are being a small minded small thinking person when you do that which makes you just as bad as the people you are judging, in my opinion. You need to be more objective. We aren't all the same as Muslims are not all the same. There are extremist in all religions and that is a fact. Christians don't hold the prize when it comes to that.

Perhaps life is a cult....in a way people "worship" various things here..singers etc etc..it has rules..there are rituals..etc. Something to think about isn't it...but then something else to think about would that that perhaps not all cults are bad..it's just that humans have made that word seem bad because the media focus's on true religious cults that do harm to the people in them.

Because they are insecure in their faith. I am secure. Hell, I am a christian, and I listen to SLAYER! Funy thing: You mentioned cults. An excert(sp?) from the Slayer song "Cult": "Religion is hate, religion is fear, religion is war. Religion is rape, religion's obscene, religion's a whore." I hear this, and I am not put off, because, I feel secure enough in my beliefs.

Because the word "cult" has bad connotations, and Christians, like any other group, wouldn't dare denote their own religion in that kind of way.

Your question has some merit, but your attack on Christianity has no merit, because you neglected to say that all religions are a form of cult due to their past, you can not condemn one, there is negativity associated in all religions, all you have done here is make people angry towards your question.

Religion is a euphamism for cult.

sorry, oh professor of theology.
it does not all fit.
#3 the worship of the ONE TRUE God Jehovah can in no way be considered " as unorthodox or spurious"
#4 Christians do not worship a person, idea, object, movement, or work .
They worship Jesus Christ, who is God.
sorry, professor.
