i don't really know that "breed" has anything to do w/ crate/kennel training.... i have a boxer pup that i purchased apx 4wks ago and i learned that DAY training works wonders! i feel that if you make her crate a "home/bed" opposed to "punishment", your results are much better! it took me roughly 2 wks of day training,,,, right after taking her outside to do her business.... and then put her in her kennel with a blanket/dog-bed and a water bottle that hooks to the cage, a chew toy and bowl of food,,,, she feels like she is in her domain, if she barks... i firmly tell her "no, (yell her name) and tell her to LAY-DOWN" and she obeys. if you "spoil" them... you cant show who's "in-charge" that makes "training" much harder.... resist the urge to give-in!!! GIVE IT TIME.... you will see results!
as far as how long it takes to do his "job" if you mean doing his out-side "business"..... i never heared or experienced it taking longer than 5 min... ask your vet?

Hey there - well, part of the goal of crate training is that the dog will potty pretty much right away (or even on command). If he/she doesn't, then back to the crate and try again in 15 minutes or so. When they do potty, treats and fun ensue! That gets a very strong message across to the dog.
*edit* remember that young pups can't be expected to hold it for 8 hours. You need a doggy daycare or a dog walker to come. And, you and everyone in your household must ignore the pup when he's fussing in his crate. Cover the crate to settle him down after he's pottied successfully. Don't ever pay any attention to him or let him out when he's making noise or it'll get worse, I promise you. Google "extinction burst dogs" for more info.

Crate training is a wonderful idea....if it is used correctly. As soon as a puppy has completed eating, wakes up from a nap, comes out of the crate, has been playing for awhile - take him outside. If he is given ample opportunity to 'do his business' outside, he'll not make messes in his crate. Let him know his crate is a 'safe place' - not a place for punishment. My 8 year old Pug loves her "bed" - 9:00 every night finds her getting restless and ready to go to bed. (She gets upset if she's not put to bed.) The most important factor is to establish a routine - feed at the same time (several small meals a day - at least 3 if not 4) and take immediately outside. Tell him to 'go pottie' - it is not play time (although he might think it is) - praise him immediately when he urinates or defecates (no specific length of time - some do their business quicker than others). If he doesn't cooperate - and you take him back inside - I guarantee within 15 minutes he'll decide to pottie (watch him like a hawk!!! - when he starts sniffing around - grab him up, rush him outside, and then tell him what a good boy he is when he goes). Play with him - take him outside, put him down for a "nap" in his crate - as soon as he comes out, he goes outside. Be certain the crate is large enough for the pup to turn around comfortably/stretch out but not so large that you're putting feed bowls and/or water bowls in the crate. This is not where he should be eating or drinking UNLESS you're going to be gone several hours then you might put a very small bowl of water (securely attached) so he can't spill it. I always put in several towels so they have padding but not a pillow to rip to shreds (until older). Some puppies like a 'hot water bottle" - you can use a 2 litre bottle with secure lid filled with hot water and wrapped in a towel. Be certain he can move away from it if he gets too hot. Sorry so long - not certain what type of advice you were seeking. But, I think crate training makes life much more enjoyable for you and your pet (no house destruction/punishment issues) - everybody benefits. Just don't use it as a way to 'put him away/forget about him' for awhile - keep to a schedule.

For crate training, you should leave him in his crate when you cannot watch him carefully and be sure to take him out every hour. I used the word "crate" right before putting my dog in his, and now he responds by going in his crate every time I say the word. At night, I didn't let my dog sleep with me, he slept in his crate. I hope this helps!

Dogs love to go on walks. People dont let them walk nearly as long as they should. Let him walk for an hour at least, even once a day. You can shorten other walks. He's a baby, so hes not just going to go outside and do his stuff. Theres a whole world thats going to have his attention.
