I'm starting to work out agin after some health problems and I will be using a basic weight bench and dumbbells...any suggestions will be helpful. My lower back has become quite weak due to walking with a cane for a few months

I suggest getting into pilates. It really strengthens the core muscles, stomach, obliques and lower back. It's low impact and fun

Using one of those big, inflatable exercise balls to do core exercises is one path to take. Usually you get a book with the ball and you get a variety of things to do.
Here is a simpler idea. This is called a sitback. Sit on the floor with your knees up. Lean your torso back to a 45-degree angle and hold it for 20 seconds. Do this once or twice a day and add 5 seconds to your time every few days. It is strengthening all the way around your torso.
