Hi there dear. Just to clarify a common misconception: just because you throw up does not mean you are bulimic. Anorexics can also purge their food, it's a sub-classification of anorexia, called Binge-Purge Type. And there are many bulimics who never purge through vomiting but purge through excessive exercise and other unhealthy means. Now if you think that something is weird with your eating, it probably is. And vomiting and chew/spit patterns are NEVER healthy. To be diagnosed with an eating disorder is a tricky thing. You must meet diagnostic criteria stated in the DSM-IV(Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition). You could easily say you have eating issues, and be correct, but only a DR can diagnose you with an eating disorder after a thorough evaluation.

The DSM-IV Diagnostic Criteria for Bulimia Nervosa:
A. Recurrent episodes of binge eating. An episode of binge eating is characterized by both of the following:
(1) Eating, in a discrete period of time (eg, within any 2-hour period), an amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would eat during a similar period of time and under similar circumstances.
(2) A sense of lack of control over eating during the episode (eg, a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control what or how much one is eating).
B. Recurrent inappropriate compensatory behavior in order to prevent weight gain, such as self-induced vomiting; misuse of laxatives, diuretics, enemas or other medications; fasting or excessive exercise.
C. The binge eating and inappropriate compensatory behaviors both occur, on average, at least twice a week for 3 months.
D. Self-evaluation is unduly influenced by body shape and weight.
E. The disturbance does not occur exclusively during episodes of anorexia nervosa.

Specify type:

1. Purging type: During the current episode of bulimia nervosa, the person has regularly engaged in self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics or enemas.
2. Nonpurging type: During the current episode of bulimia nervosa, the person has used inappropriate compensatory behaviors, such as fasting or excessive exercise, but has not regularly engaged in self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics or enemas.

The DSM-IV Diagnostic Criteria for Anorexia Nervosa:
A. Refusal to maintain body weight at or above a minimally normal weight for age and height (e.g., weight loss leading to maintenance of body weight less than 85% of that expected; or failure to make expected weight gain during period of growth, leading to body weight less than 85% of that expected).
B. Intense fear of gaining weight or becoming fat, even though underweight.
C. Disturbance in the way in which one's body weight or shape is experienced, undue influence of body weight or shape on self-evaluation, or denial of the seriousness of the current low body weight.
E. In postmenarcheal females, amenorrhea, i.e., the absence of at least three consecutive menstrual cycles. (A woman is considered to have amenorrhea if her periods occur only following hormone, e.g., estrogen, administration.)

Specify type:

1. Restricting Type: during the current episode of Anorexia Nervosa, the person has not regularly engaged in binge-eating or purging behavior (i.e., self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas)

2. Binge-Eating/Purging Type: during the current episode of Anorexia Nervosa, the person has regularly engaged in binge-eating or purging behavior (i.e., self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas)

There are other eating disorders, bulimirexia, orthorexia, anorexia athletica, binge eating disorder and most common, eating disorder not otherwise specified(ednos), but for now mostly anorexia and bulimia are recognized as eating disorders in the medical community.

I would suggest that you get professional help. The path you are going down is hell, and take in any help you can get. I'm enclosing a link to a great website on eating disorder recovery. Good luck to you dear! Fight for your life, it's worth it!

I think you already know the answer. When someone has an eating disorder that is a choice that you make and its because you are desperate to lose weight or not gain weight. I have thought about it myself, but I have enough problems already. Just stop doing it because you are in the beginning stage. Instead of throwing up or starving yourself, try working out to burn the calories you have eaten.

Yes, you have an eating disorder. You have a horrible relationship with food and what you're doing is technically binging and purging. This could become bullemia nervosa. You should see a psychologist and your family doctor to discover a proper course of treatment.

Yes, sweety. You need to talk to a professional to find the cause of this behavior. If you don´t know where to begin, ask for help from a friend, counselor, your parents, ideally an adult.

You can get better and continue with your life. Best of luck to you.

that sounds like bulimia...
but i don't understand about eating with your friends... usually people with ED's don't want people to see them eating.
talk to a school counselor or someone who can help you. bulimia has lots of terrible side effects and if you have that, you need help immediately.
