To understand the concept of eating smaller meals to speed it up, you gotta understand how your body works. The idea behind eating 6 small meals throughout the day is this; you're training your body to burn the food instead of store it as fat. if you only eat 3 times a day, but eat large meals, you're body will only use what it needs, and store the rest as fat. This is becuase it thinks it won't get fed for awhile. When you eat small meals thorughout the day, the body learns that it will continue to be fed, and does not need to store the excess as fat.

"i read that eating less slows the metabolism" - This is true if you are NOT eating more per day. So, if you eat less, but only 3 times a day, your body begins to starve, and stores most of your food as fat.

Don't skip breakfast, either; it kick starts your metabolism for the day.

Both are true. Eat smaller meals but more often, so it seems like you're constantly eating. That way you're metabolism is always working but the amount of calories at any one time remain low.

To speed up your metabolism, your have to do aerobic exercises which can be a multitude of things ranging from simply jogging to buying a work out video to playing DDR (Dance Dance Revolution). The results of an aerobic work out comes AFTER the work out has been completed, not during the work out itself. Keep at it and pretty soon you'll be burning more calories more efficiently.
