Hi, I am a sleep lab technologist (yep, there is such a thing) and this can be a problem. If kids go to bed later on the weekends and get up later, they have trouble going to bed at the right time on the weekdays and then end up having trouble at school or behavioral problems.

It makes sense, if you are tired, could you pay attention for 6 hours, wouldn't you be a little cranky.

For a 7 year old, he should be in bed about 9 pm, no later than 9:30. He'll be better behaved, easier to manage and happier overall. Plus you can have a little time to yourself. Everybody wins.

I think a lot of it has to do with your own needs (aka sanity!). I sometimes put my daughter down early just so I can have some "me time". As a single mom it can be tough to get a moment to yourself.

I have a 13 year old who stays up usually til 12-1am on weekends. My daughter is 3 and she goes to bed no later than 9 on weekends.

I think allowing a 7 year old to stay up until 11 is no big deal on weekends. If you're not too sure about it, only allow it one night on the weekend, or every other weekend.

When I was 7, my parents put me to bed at around 10, and I wake up at 8 (school starts at 8:45 am). On weekends, I was allowed to stay up a bit late, until around 10:30 or so.

Now I'm 14 (turning 15 in a few months), and this is still my routine. I'm a happy human being, doing well in school, healthy, and alive! Staying up a teensy bit late on weekends probably won't be a problem. Treating your child helps your kid from being overly rebellious, so it's a win win situation :)

I think that it is ok on Fri. and Sat nights to let kids stay up late. Some people disagree but I have done it with my kids and they love it. Most of the time if you dont make a big deal about it they get tired earlier anyway and end up going to bed before 11:00pm. Hope this helps.

I put my son, age 7, and my daughter, age 5, to bed at 8pm on a school night and 10pm on the weekend. Sometimes a little earlier on the weekend, depending on what time they have to get up in the morning. Staying on a "schedule" works the best for them.

8 p.m. weeknights and 9 to 10 p.m. on weekends depending on behavior. I have a 3, 6, 8, and a 12 year old and they all have the same bed time for now.

I have three children. My oldest is 9, during the week she is in bed by 830pm and on the nights there is no school she sometimes stays up til 11pm. She's allowed to do this but she's not allowed to be "up my behind" during this time because after 8pm I consider it my time to catch up or do what I want to do or whatever. Unless we are going to watch a movie together or something she is up in her room playing or watching tv.
My 6 and 4 y/o go to bed at 8pm, period. After 8pm it's my time with my husband or to read or whatever, that's how its always been unless we have something special planned.
