First take a firearms safety class, and perhaps a self defense class. Then speak to your instructors about where you can get an honest deal.

Before you buy a gun, be advised that a gun by itself, without the training to handle it is a liability, not an asset. You cannot just draw a gun and expect to hit anything with it, without proper training in firearms handling and marksmanship. You will also have to be familiar with the laws concerning the use of deasdly force. Owning a gun and using one is an awesome responsibility. With that having been said, you can get just about what you want in sporting goods store, or gun shops.

Depends upon your location, I am from Oklahoma and sop at Tous for the Big Boys; if you are in the South or Southwest any good gun store will do. I recommend the Glock 26, it is a 9mm and well designed so recoil should not be an issue. If you decide you enjoy shooting then there are a variety of guns that will have matching parts.

Enjoy yourself and stay safe.

if on a budget, go to a discount dealer. Bud's gun shop. they have the lowest prices on the whole internet. unfortunately due to gun/ammo ban scare their stock might not be very good, same for all the other retails like jgsales, impact and atlantic. you can go visit gunbroker or gunsamerica, which is mostly used guns... it's a seller's market right now which means you have alot of selection but not necessarily the best prices. Hi point is a great budget handgun, but you need ot know exactly what you want. Hi Point is a very basic gun. if you're expecting rails and aftermarket stuff you're looking at the wrong gun. it's like going to the desert and complaining there's no water. Hi Point's are reliable, accurate, cheap, and simple. I own a Hi Point C9, it's a very good handgun for $135. it's got a lifetime warranty that i really like, it shoots accurately and consistently, and it's simple to clean and low maintenance. it's very rugged, according to batteries of you tube tests there's almost nothing you can do to a Hi Point that can break it, and the lack of exposed steel also makes it very rust resistant. the gun's exterior is very rugged and handles rough handling well- doesn't scratch easily. the internal parts are simple enough and coated. if it breaks just send it to hi point or have them send you parts, repairs are free.

Hmmm. I'm fortunate - I know a gun dealer, so I go through him. You should be able to find a reputable gun store in your area. If you're really uncertain, call your local police department and ask them. Be sure to take safety classes! A gun is a big responsibility.

Good luck!

Find a good local gun store. They may even help you to learn how to shoot. Also make sure if your are going to carry that you get your Concealed Weapons permit, to avoid getting a felony

Try looking at pawn shops. You should be able to get a good deal there since they are used.
