i would go earth tones......tans, beiges, or even a rich ochre. this would bring out the colors of the couch and the dark cherry wood furniture.

i would go neutral and get a nice persian or oriental looking rug to put by the floor infront of the coach and a nice coffee table on the rug. on the table, i would put a couple of dark scented candles of different sizes on one edge of the table and a couple of nice books on the other side.

you can add maroon or burgundy throw pillows to pull the cherry furniture, the rug and the couch together.

I would suggest going to Lowes and obtaining the Glidden CD from the paint section (I belive it's about $6) It is a CD you can just pop into your computer that will load all different kinds of rooms onto your screen. For example, Living Rooms. You can make the furniture the color of your own furniture, and then you can pick out the paint for the walls and see how it all goes together.

I'm sorry I cannot tell you what color of paint to use! However, I used to have a cranberry colored couch and had no idea what to use on the walls. I got that Glidden CD and ended up finding the perfect mauve color to use. I had a lady visit me once, whose family owned a local paint store, and she complimented me on my color choice. Not bad for someone who, like you, had no idea what to use!

I think something in the gold tones would look good, or maybe even a shade of green, if you have any in the room. Try to bring out and match the color of the least amount in your sofa, if you want to highlight it. Don't forget to consider your drapery color and any artwork that that you may already have, and will be using in the room~ they will play a big part in the finished room~
Good Luck!!

Try borrowing one of the colour swatch samplers from a paint store and start by checking out your favourite colours in different lights eg. daylight, artificial light--sometimes a colour that you think you will like turns out to be hideous in a different light setting.
Also try to either stay in a colour family or go for a bit of contrast, you can be daring, but just remember that painting takes a lot of effort and you will be looking at the colour everyday for a while.

I would go with a "wood" tone like a cherry wood or a rich oak. this will give a feeling of warmth in the room as well as an "earthy" richness .
