Where do they come from? Are they useful?

Good question!
How about they are used as a measuring device...as long as I can remember, those darn zig-zags have been imprinted on the gum...maybe, when it was first sold, the machines cutting the gum slices needed some hint of measurment, OR they had workers who had to cut them???
Or it is simply a 'patent' for Wrigley's gum (or is it on the other's also???) to separate their slices from others...
Or, whoever started putting them on there was a jokster, wondering how long it would take before anyone would question the lines!!!!

Not all gum has the zig-zag lines, and that is a good question because i have no clue what they are for!

The gum is made on an assembly line. The lines are from the machine cutting it, and then pushing it down the line.

maybe our all power lord xenu, who rules all, has left you a sign of his presence. You should take this seriously, for if one of xenu's signs is ignored then he will show his wrath by attacking you with one of his dolphin shaped tentacles. i ignored one of his signs, now i pee from a straw. heed my warning, take that gum and raise it to the sky. get as high as possible., then scream whatever makes since to you at the time. what ever you say is what he was trying to tell you.
