I'm trying to teach my 11 month old to drink on their own and someone suggested using a cup with a straw in it, but how can I teach him to suck the straw? Previously I have just been using a cup with a spout for him to drink water from, so he thinks it will just pour in his mouth. Should I give up and just go back to the spout until his older and then retry a straw??

I taught my son how to whistle at 8 months old. you show them by blowing in and out thru the mouth. he realized he can suck in and out. so when i gave him a cup with a straw he blew out and made bubbles but then he blew in and realized he got something out of it! use regular size straw and then cut it in half so at first they suck less to recieve the liquid then once they got it use a regular size straw they will realize they have to suck a little longer.
my son also loves bendy straws they curve so he doesnt have to tip over his cup. good luck

My son merely did it quicker or later. My niece become ingesting out of a straw and he needed some, she placed the straw in his mouth and away he went. He become about 16 months previous. have you ever tried the sippy cups with the delicate spout? those would artwork extra effective than the demanding spouts. via the undeniable fact that is extra like a bottle, she would placed 2 and a pair of jointly.
